Unfortunately, the example you posted is NOT a logline. No one ever claimed it was a logline, not even IMDB.

As one can plainly see it is listed under "Plot" which is different from IMDB's "tag line" and from a "logline." Odds are, you will never see loglines for many movies if you are not in the industry.

Logline is a pitch for the execs and readers, taglines are for the audience, it's why you won't see them.

Anyway, I haven't seen the first two you listed.

Spiderman 3 though it was a work for hire piece and never would have had a logline...I can't remember the other photographer's name in the film so I'll keep it generic. These are off the cuff loglines with no real thought put into them, so take them as such.

Overcome by a parasitic alien substance, Peter Parker also known as Spiderman struggles with a new darker identity as the darkness leeches its way in to every aspect of his life and threatens to tear him apart.

On the discovery of an alien substance that can overtake what it touches, Peter Parker's overcome by it's dark influences then forced to face the mess it leaves and a new enemy to both spiderman and Peter Parker which calls itself Venom.

Peter Parker isn't the only one who's over come by the darkness of Venom, an alien substance that overtakes the host with it's dark influences, as false photographer takes it for a spin.

Caught in an identity crisis, Peter Parker, with the aide of an alien substance, fights his own darkside, then watches it take form on a rival photographer he successfully helped destroy.

Well, no. The responses you got were fair and accurate I thought.

And as witnessed by Sara's heroic efforts to logline Spider-man 3, I'd say it's going to be extremely difficult to pull that off for any of the films you list. A logline has to accurately represent the film so, taking one of Sara's as an example, what happens when the script is read and the producer says, "You said this was about some guy called Venom. But when I read the script, there was some Sandman guy as well and another green goblin!" (No offense, Sara)

The inherent problem there is that, IMO, Spider-man 3 was a bit of a mess. No logline is worthy of Closer and Love, Actually... well, I'm not even sure Richard Curtis knows what the hell that was.

Anyway. Writing loglines is a nightmare at the best of time so don't feel bad that people weren't chomping at the bit to logline these. I'm thinking that maybe the point of your exercise is the idea of, well, what do you do when you write a script like this and then need to write a logline? And that's a fair question but I think if you're an unknown writing spec material like the above then you've got bigger problems than loglines. VMMV.

Why not suggest a more "normal" film to logline? :)

Even if you'd remembered those extra characters, I don't see how anyone could really make an accurate logline for that film because there are three antoagnosists - each as arguably important as the other - not to mention the drama of Peter's personal life.

I think the most accurate logline would be, "More of the same but this time with three bad guys."

Even if you'd remembered those extra characters, I don't see how anyone could really make an accurate logline for that film because there are three antoagnosists - each as arguably important as the other - not to mention the drama of Peter's personal life.

Yeah, I didn't feel picked on, I had completely forgotten about those extras.

Yeah, it was a mess character wise. You're probably right.

A dark spiderman, facing his guilt ridden past and Sandman, who's responsible for the death of his grandfather, he battles with the alien substance venom that's taken over his own life, and his old foe Goblin Jr, has recovered his memory and is working hard to kill him once again, but Spiderman is badder.
