Suppose you wanted the dialog to fade in and fade out....

Obviously "fade" is a bit of a stretch.

Is there some better way to say that you want the volume on the
dialog to come up to fully audible and then go down to inaudible?

Or is fade in...fade out the way to specify that?

dialogue is assumed to be in the foreground unless you say otherwise.

fades into b.g. (background) can be used to suggest that dialogue continues while some other important dialogue drowns it out -- like a radio or television voice. when you want this "radio" dialogue to come back to the foreground then all you have to do is cease all other talking and it is assumed to be back.

does that make sense? is that what you're talking about?

I guess "his words fade out as...." or something like that would be fine.
