South OC here. Sunshine, palm trees, no smog today and nothing left to burn after last October's shindig . . .

South OC like Dana Pointish or Capistrano-ish? Or are you further down?

You know, those palm trees are just fake implants, don't you? (Insert your own LA joke here.)

I'm flex. We could do Pas, or downtown, or we could meet down in the beaches (Redondo, etc.) if some of the OC folks wanted to head north.

livin it up in hollyhood! if i'm not watching forest fires from my balcony, i'm listening to sirens blazing down hollywood blvd...

we should totally totally have an AW LA/LBC/IE/add acronym here bar night meetup. I can't think of anyplace literary so I will suggest Hamburger Mary's in WeHo. or that bar next to book soup on sunset. downtown is too scary at night!

The UCLA Extension is holding a free Writer's Faire (http://www2.uclaextension.edu/writers/events.php?eventID=20&uutm_source=unex&utm_medium=email&utm_content=writersfaireinkit&utm_campaign=job%239200su%2F08B) on September 7, 2008. It's a bunch of free 'mini-classes' about writing fiction, plays, screenplays, and creative writing in general. Here's the schedule (http://www2.uclaextension.edu/writers/pdfs/quarterly/writersfairegrid.pdf) in PDF format. It looks cool. I guess people who attend also get a discount on any courses they enroll in for the upcoming quarter.

I'm not affiliated with UCLA extension at all; my partner just forwarded me an email about the event. It looked interesting and I figure all the Angelenos are subscribed to this thread. Happy Friday!

Oo oo I know! The West Hollywood Book Fair (http://www.westhollywoodbookfair.org/) is September 28th. I went last year and it was big fun. They have a REALLY good bunch of authors coming this year (including Ray Bradbury! Heard him speak last year and it changed my life!) to talk and sign books. All the local bookstores, small publishers, self-pubbed authors, entertainment, and delicious street fair food too. Plus stuff for the kiddies. If beers are needed, there are numerous bars of differing levels of raucousness to retreat to just a block away. It's at the big park on Santa Monica and San Vicente. It's like a tinier, quirkier version of LA Times Festival of Books.

Who would be game for an AW meet-up at the festival? I'm there for sure, so count me in! If other peeps are interested, I can unofficially organize us.

I'm more of a Fiesta Cantina gal myself, but the Abbey is quite nice. Then there's Normandie Room, Benvenuto, and a bunch of bars that are probably too rowdy for any proper chatting to take place.

I'm looking for a writer's group in the Glendale/Pasadena/Burbank area. Willing to read any genre, although I'm not an expert in romance or thrillers. Currently working on sequel to first novel coming out in August 2008 (prehistoric coming-of-age). Any interest?

So I am a volunteer ski instructor up at Big Bear (two resorts: Bear Mountain and Snow Summit). To thank volunteers, they give us a bunch of free lift tickets to give to our friends. But my friends IRL are all city folk who fear the great snowy outdoors.

If any AWers in the greater LA area (or even San Diego!) would like some free lift tickets for some skiing fun, please PM me! I have a lot of them, so I can give out like four at a time if you want to take the whole family. One can rent skis up at Big Bear for about $30. It would make me really happy to give away some lift tickets so some writers could go skiing! The tickets are good for both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit on the same day. There should be good skiing up there until the end of March.

The Festival of Books is an outdoor event in the middle of the day--could get pretty hot.

What was the plan? Just meet up and walk around the booths together as a group? Or is there no plan?

It's held on the UCLA campus so if we wanted a cool place to talk we'd have to find a restaurant or something.

P.S. I live in LA and am hoping to tag along.

I'm afraid I probably can't do Sunday :(

Saturday only would work for me. Let's see what everyone else prefers.

Smiling Ted
04-20-2009, 07:02 AM
The festival is Saturday and Sunday - if that helps folks.
There was food available at some booths last year.
There are plenty of porches and hallways for the coolness factor.
I had thought we might just meet, chat for a bit, and take it from there.
Check out the panels available on the website, and see what days look good.

there's a building attached to the student union that has a very fine cafe-sandwiches, smoothies, baked delights, coffee, etc. it is a lovely respite from the heat! and the student union has jamba juice.

i'll be there all day saturday. i highly recommend to anybody going that they buy tickets to see ray bradbury at 4:30 saturday (ETA: tickets are free, plus a 1.50 ticketmaster charge). he's unbelievably awesome and inspirational even if you don't write sf/fantasy!

Just wanted to say, I went to this last year and it was pretty fun. The UCLA Extension has some really cool instructors and you can hear them talk and stuff. It's more geared toward the writerly noob, but there are some interesting talks for people who write both fiction and plays/screenplays.

Hello fellow AWers of LA! Just wanted to point out that The LA Times Festival of Books is next weekend at UCLA, April 24-25. There will be heaps of books and famous authors and celebrities who wrote books, and if you have little kids they have some amazing free entertainment on the children's stage. I'll be there for my fourth year, I love it and I can't get enough!
