ack!
hey, while we're here i should tell you about a mildly scary (but now amusing) moment from over the weekend ...

a few old apples trees at the back of the cray property lure in constant stream of deer, groundhogs and other varmints. on saturday, i'm preparing to put ribs in the smoker (that story has a sad ending) and i see a groundhog back there.

i look over at emma (vizsla) and say is "groundhog." her ears go up, nose in air and she's on the move. it's about 70 yards to the apple trees. she runs about 50 of them and then gets low and slinks in the rest of the way. i don't have a whole lot of concern that she's going to get into a serious tussle and get hurt. emma is wise enough to scare 'em but keep her distance. so, before the thing can move emma is right there between the groundhog and its hole. the mighty beast is now in a staring contest with emma.

here’s the fun part, one of the little crays (3yr boy) is in the garden with mrs. cray. he takes notice of this and starts running towards the scene.
i take notice of this and start screaming for little cray to stop. yea, he didn’t listen at all. so now i’m in a full sprint yelling at this kid not to go near the dog and the groundhog. i have 70 yards to run. little cray has about 15 or 20, if that.

the dog and the groundhog have not moved. normally, emma won’t go much more than a few feet from them but with the chaos of me yelling and the kid coming i think emma must have decided to get a little more serious. about 3 seconds before my son got there moves in close and with teeth showing she puts her nose about 3 centimeters from the groundhog’s nose. the thing is on lock down.

did i ever tell you that i rented a house on a christmas tree farm for about 6 years? the owner of the place was a young guy who was passionate about his work and also passionate in his protection of those christmas trees from varmints. in those 6 years i’ve witnessed him running after groundhogs and killing them in hand to hand combat. ok. he never used his hands. he’d start with a kick while running at full speed. they’d fly about 10 feet and then either get away or not because he was still coming at them stomping and kicking. crazy crazy dude. so, while i’m sprinting towards all this in my head i’m reviewing all the groundhog stomping techniques that i’ve witnessed. i’m also doing various calculations on what’s going to happen next. do i come in full speed and drop kick the groundhog into tomorrow or do i carefully extract the kid somehow? and what i’m i going to do if things do progress? and i know we’re not dealing with a grizzly bear here but i’m scared that the thing going to turn and scratch my son or bite. (they do bite sometimes and when they do they sometimes won’t let go.)

little cray arrives about 3 seconds before me and yea….MY SON PUNCHED A GROUNDHOG. he punched the thing 3 times in the back of the head before i got there. holy shit. he punched it. wft.

somewhere along the line i decided that a full speed flying kick might exacerbate the situation so i swooped in grabbed little cray and retreated.
emma’s hackles go down and she takes another sniff and releases the thing from her gaze.
good dog. GOOD DOG!

so now i’m left wondering…….did emma just have its full attention or could it be that my son can’t throw a punch? :D i’m choosing to believe that the groundhog has a headache today and that if it flinched emma would have pounced.

cripes, look at all those words up there. i’ve exceeded my aw word count and typo limit for august and september.

It is one of the great horrors of parenthood - getting to see every possible scenario of a bad situation before it happens in the matter of a split second and no matter what you do, you can't move fast enough to prevent any of them.
Thankfully a lot of those situations end like yours, but you still see the bad "could have beens" in your head for a long time to come.

Great story cray! It seems to me that animals communicate very well without words. Emma let the ground hog know one move and you're dead, buster. And of course, the ground hog knew who the real threat was.

This reminds me of a time I tried to step between two neighbors fighting, a young husband beating up his pregnant wife in front of the house. At first the guy turned on me, then quickly backed off. I thought I'd said or done something that caused it, then turned and found my husband had also come outside and was quietly standing right behind me.

I was testing a new vaccine to battle mad cow disease, but I think it works a little too well.

It actually seems to cause happy cow disease.

The farmers won't mind. Will they?

As everyone in the bus zones out on valium or chocolate milk, Anne sneaks away and fells a number of trees across the only road leading out of the woods. The chainsaw sputters and dies, out of gas from all the body slashing and...um...tree cutting. In the distance, a strange sound rumbles through the forest, becoming louder and louder as it nears the bus. As the ground begins to tremble, the bus's occupants jolt awake. A voice erupts in terror. "No! No! It's the yeti! And he's not alooooooone......"
