View Full Version : Shout box

Posted to SYW, or another forum, and want comments? Want to think out loud about a WIP? Discuss what's making your brane explodify?
Here's a place for it.
ETA: Thinking about this as a "Share Your Work Starbucks" equivalent. For general conversation rather than WIP conversation, there's the salon (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133081).

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRGH!
I'm trying to query a paranormal romance/dark/urban fantasy/time traveling/historical/thriller/mystery/theater novel.
Does that fit into this shout box? Cause it sure as hell makes me change my query letter according to the agent I query. What a pain in the ass.

Might be more of a tea salon conversation? Shout box being more of a sandboxy place? I dunno!

Here is a link to an interstitial brane-eating poem of mine, which is accidentally the first post in the Interstices SYW:
http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3343167#post3343167
Critiques would be very very welcome!
Mscelina, I think your situation almost calls for tailoring, no?

Oh, I can tailor with the best of them. Paranormal romance on one letter, urban fantasy on another...whatever they like, that's what I make it. ;)
Eventually, someone will figure it out I guess.
Wouldn't mind a crit or two on this flash piece i've just posted:
Night Terrors (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133399)
I personally kinda like it (but what writer doesn't like his own stuff, right?), but it does need help :)
Thanks

Iz, your link doesn't work. (whoops)
Your piece is here (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3345896&postcount=1).
Wow - so that's what happens when there's an extra http:\\ in the address - i end up on a czech phishing site.
Corrected, and thank Williebee :)

But Isacc, a czech phishing site seems perfect for Interstices.
Sorry, guys. I'm still trying to figure this all out, but I'm getting closer.
Yes, it does, doesn't it?

Okay. I'm seeing two directions for this...thing thing we call Interstices. One is what I might have called Surreal. You know. Like mushrooms talking to squids. The other is, well, stories that don't follow a normal path yet make a little bit more sense. An example that comes to mind is one I read yesterday in Arkham Tales (http://www.arkhamtales.com/)--The Key Ring, by Garret Calcaterra. (It's a free download folks, go do it. :D) It's a great story. Does it fit the genre?
eta: a little bit about the story--it's about a house with many rooms, only they're not normal rooms.

I'm hoping this thing we call Interstices will go in more than two directions, all at once. But those are two of the directions I'm hoping it'll take :)

Hello!! :) Is this where I can say that I'm into Magical Realism, satire and existential literature but know next to nothing about sci-fi? Surrealism is kinda iffy for me, depending on my mood.
Is it OK that I'm trying to avoid learning more sci-fi until my MR novel is complete? I'll find it creeping into what I want to be solidly MR (or MR/satire/existentialism, which is a lovely little mess to have screaming at your writer's brain in itself!)
Forgive my inattention to many of your favorite topics, pretty please? :)

Welcome!
Try the salon (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133081)?
It's an actively good thing, I think, that you come from a different literary background from a lot of us :)

Um, i has another shout out for crit *looks embarrassed*.
I'm not gonna hog the SYW too much, i swear. It's just that this one made its way back to me tonight with a form reject (as did the other one a couple days ago) and this forum is now here and it all seems very fortuituous :D

This might sound really dumb, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe my stuff is more interstitial than straight horror? I don't know what to call what I write...

Posted work in SYW. Don't forget about Eigengrau, either! I am trying to make it a readable story.

Hey AMC, i've posted links to your pieces just below for ease of access for people reading this thread :) Hopefully i'll have a chance to look at them within the next day or two.
Love Thy Neighbor (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135970)
Riddles of the Sphinx and Two Dreamlets (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135964)
Also, now that i've been reminded of this thread, I've posted a revision, and now some edits, for this story, Money for Nothing, the Stars for a Fee (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3398353&postcount=7), and would love any further crit.

I don't know if this is interstitial. It's another fairytale (because I can't rid myself of writing fairytales.) There is some mention of sexxorz.

I've just noticed a new post in Interstice SYW: Vignettes - Flashes (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141235), by a brand new member.
Thought i'd give a shout out on her behalf seeing as she might not know about the Shout box (and because it would be great to have some extra critters in interstices SYW :))

A segment (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3620832#post3620832) I'm working on. If it interests you, feel free to comment or add to it. Honestly.

Two new postings in the SYW (neither of them mine):
In the cool of the Day (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147834) by Aggy B.
and Color Dance (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147991) by JustDee. I'm not sure if this one is particularly interstitial, but that might just be me not reading it right.
Anyway, i'm sure they'd love some crits :)
I can't seem to figure out a genre for my writing. (I've a link to my blog in my profile that contains the pieces I'm talking about) I write about how I'm feeling about events in my life, simple as that. However, when I get them on paper, it looks like something horrifying... Maybe I should create my own category... "Horrifying". Help?

Hi, Shay. I couldn't find the link to your blog, but I've left a reply over in Share Your Work. I have no idea how helpful I am since I don't tend to worry about genre much. Especially not, if I enjoyed the read, as I did in this case. :)
Dawnstorm, I found your reply. Thanks again :D

Hi Intersticians, I have a story over at SYW here (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3963138#post3963138), and I'd love some crits. Don't be shy, make me cry. I can take it.
Cheers :)
