Man, I just read something depressing. I was checking out the forum at Epicenter - a very quite place - and saw somebody ask about how many hits he could count on getting in a month.

A guy in Miami (a night life Examiner) said he was getting 12,000 hits a month!

Ok, should I be encouraged, that perhaps with a little more time, my city will attract more readers and I'll get more page views....or very depressed that I live in a boring city?

By the way, Feb was my first full month and I pulled in a little more than 2000 page views.

After seeing that note that we have to get $25 in our account before they cough it up any cash, I'm going to push to add more quality posts this month!

There may be a vocabulary issue; I don't know.

A "hit" happens several times for each page.
Each graphic is a hit.
The text is a hit.

Hit's are not a reliable or useful metric; Unique Visitors or Page Views are better.

A page view refers to all of a page. If a user reloads a page within a "session" (the duration of a "session" is usually determned by the Web master/admin) then only the first page view of that unique visitor is counted.

I take it by "hits" you mean the hits we get paid for. 12,000 is definitely doable. I just checked my March stats and I was over 20,000. My dream goal is 1000 per day, although that doesn't seem like it will be happening any time soon. I'd love to maintain the 20,000 though. I'm not doing any social networking at all, so even if you don't have a topic as hot as Disney/Orlando, you can probably make a lot of that up if you use things like Twitter and Facebook effectively (I just don't have the time to do that).

Medievalist: where are you coming from? I only know what the reporting page tells me, it doesn't say a dang thing about what is getting clicked on. (Did I forget to specifiy I'm talking Examiner here - I got caught up in thinking this was the Examiner only room! Over excited, I guess!)

Ink: how long have you been at Examiner? And did it build up slowly for you, or was your topic an instant smash? I should work at social media a little more too, but I'm lazy.

I think I started in January, and I had a built-in hook: Disney World. The internet following for Disney information is amazing. I actually started off pretty strong and learned the kinds of headlines that draw in readers. Then the WDW media event a month or two later got me a ton of readership because of the American Idol tie-in. I think I have around 60 subscribers now. If you're not already, you may want to tell people to subscribe at the end of your articles.
