Some time back, someone mentioned looking for markets for mainstream/contemporary stories. I have some bookmarked and will post them here for you. Feel free to add any of your own that you have come across.
Links are great, but snail mail info is good too. :)
I will edit periodically to add more links that I come across and if you post any in replies, I will edit to add them here, too.

Hey Jen,
There is a whole list of literary magazines at http://www.laurahird.com/litmagindex.html. I'm not sure which ones are legit or not but I thought I would post the link and let you look through them.

Thanks!
I've been a bit AWOL here lately -- getting ready for vacation & getting work done & then the actual vacation -- but I think I'm back and ready to go. lol. I'll take a look at that link a little later today. :)

This is an excellent Canadian site. Most of the markets are literary but many of those literary journals do accept mainstream/contemporary. Read the guidelines.
Sorry, I am totally inept at turning urls into live links. Some day I'll find someone to tell me how to do it!

Thanks for the link, pdr. As long as you include the http:// in front of the link information (like you did), it'll turn itself into a live link. :)

As simple as that, Jen. I really must find time to have I.T. lessons from someone!

Just letting you know about those two in case you have them bookmarked. It could be temporary since it's been a while since I checked them the first time and they worked then.

anyone have a list or names of book publishers interested in mainstream novels with contemporary theme? if so, I am waiting as patiently as I can. thanks
Chicagogal,
Behler is a book publisher. I believe it's maestrowork who recently had a book published with them.
I've been meaning to get more things added to the listing. It's just taking me longer than I originally thought.

Jen, thanks for the reply to my recent question. do you have a web or e mail address for this company? there are so many characters living in my head, I need to take them on a vacation or expose them to the public. the latter wins of course.

The first post in this thread has links to different market listings, magazines, and book publishers, including Behler (http://behlerpublications.com/submissions.shtml). The link will take you to their submissions guidelines page. :)

Oooops! Sorry to leave it hanging like that.
A few weeks ago, I got DSL and had to switch computers wtih my mom (she had one at the office not being used). All of my bookmarks are -- thankfully -- on a CD. After I get some work done today, I'll get that and go through what I have. It'll be this afternoon/this evening before I can get 'em posted, though.
HarperCollins (http://www.harpercollins.com) is one that is sticking in my mind, but if I recall correctly, they don't take unagented submissions.

I'm not sure if you're looking for small press, but Soft Skull Press does mainstream/contemporary fiction and they accept unagented submissions. Many of their authors have been reviewed in the New York Times, and I've read several of their books and thought they were great.

April,
Thanks for posting that link. I'll get it added to the first post in this discussion thread.
Chicago,
I'm finally finished for the day, so I will get to the bookmarks and other info on that CD I mentioned.

In saying I would do something later in the evening, I did not count on being called to go work in our Ardmore (Oklahoma) office yesterday and today. I left here about 8:30 Tuesday evening and had to pack in a hurry.
Unfortunately, that meant leaving promised things un-done. Let's see if I can post anything of any use here. :)
