View Full Version : What do you think of my script title?

Today, I started a new project to help get my mind off a current project that is driving me crazy. I have a few ideas for content and have a rough story already in mind, that is really just a rehashing of an old story.
This is what I'm posting about, I have an idea for the title and wanted to find out 1) what people think about it and 2) based on the title alone what do you think it could be about (genre or plot).
Granted I know this might seem impossible but i'm banking on that age old adage of "judging a book by its cover".
The title is: "Caparella"
I did an imdb search and found only people with the name but not a film.
Any thoughts?

I can't even pronounce the name, but titles are something I only really give any thought until after my pieces are finished unless the idea shows up with one. Shows how much weight I put in titles.

I normally wait until after as well; That's kind of how this one happened though. The idea came with the name.

I think this thread should have been titled "New Title Idea".
In answer to your question, hearing the title "Caparella" doesn't give me any idea what it could be about. That's not a bad thing, but for me anyway- no genre, no theme, no concept comes to mind.

Just to get first impressions. No point really.

The title doesn't generate much of an interest for me but, as you stated, first impressions can be deceiving. It makes me think of some exotic flower not sure why.

The only kind of title that would fit this sort of concern is a high concept one. Like the "Nigerian Swindle" in another thread. Or "Zack and Miri Make a Porno"
Caparella. Sounds Italian, so it could be either a mob story or something about an Italian restaurant or a war story about an Italian village or ... anything really.

Without looking it up, "Caparella" sounds like a music notation term or similar.
If it was "The Caparellas" - ey, dat would be different, you knows? :)

Unlike some on here, I also like to name my projects before writing them out. I guess everyone has their own methods. As for judging a book by it's cover: I usually pick a book/movie up based on the graphics on the cover instead of the title itself. If I seen a book with only the named "Caparella" on it I would think it might be close to "Cinderella" lol. Just because the two names are similar. Good luck with the project. :)

Without any more info about the sort of project it's impossible to answer: is it about the mafia? Is it about a real-life person called Caparella? Or a musical about Al Capone? A hat-maker in Naples? A dyslexic remake of 'Its a Wonderful Life'? The title does not grab me. The art might, or star or director. Whats the logline?

I immediately thought of Cinderella. So me and the Pez Dispensor are thinking on the same wave length.
The notion of there being such a thing as a "working title" is justification enough for "needing" to come up with a title before actually beginning the project. Not all writers "need" a working title, but others find that a really good title can be a source of energy to keep the momentum going.

Wow. I haven't been on here in the last couple of days so i didn't realize this had become such an interesting topic.
To answer some of the questions: Like I said before it's a rehashing of an old story I had. The direct link for the name is to a story within the screenplay itself. I have been working on it the last few days and can say that the story the title is referencing is, I always pictured as, a fantasy story. Not necessarily like "Cinderella" fantasy, but like "Lord of the Rings" fantasy. This big kind of sweeping epic. I did picture it as being based in, tentatively, the Italian Renaissance with the main characters name being "Caparella".
I can potentially see references to the Italian Mob but nothing is fully set in stone yet.

Also, as for the logline I haven't really thought of that yet. I usually try to wait with that until I'm finished because I never truly know what a story is going to be about(fully) until I finish it.

I had a pro screenwriter tell me that starting a screenplay with no clear ending in mind is a perfect recipe for an unfinished screenplay. While the writing of a novel or a short story doesn't necesarilly need a clear ending in mind at the outset, a screenplay is a whole other animal-- a screenplay needs a very tight structure to it, so you need that blue print in your mind for Beginning, Middle and End before you start writing one. Otherwise your screenplay will wind up with one of two destinies: either it never gets finished, or it becomes beset with cliche and derivative (especially the ending itself becoming nothing but cliche and derivative).
I'm not saying it's impossible for a truly gifted writer to launch out on a whim and then just pull it all out of his ass with structural perfection and total originality, but I don't see it happening for the average writer --not even for the above average writer.

For me the title should tell a bit of your script . I titled my story My Indian sister because the twin look like her father who is an Indian . Most of the scripts which I read do that .

well I have to say, I'm Italian and I speak it fluently, and well I hate to say it "caparella" means nothing to me. And from my time here in the US most italian names I come across typically have a direct translation and a minimal variation in spelling. I know this doesn't really help but if you're audience is Italians or even people that love Italian history, I'd go with a more Italian name. I know I wouldn't be inspired to go see this as an Italian.

Caparella huh?
To me it sounds like a futuristic Sci-Fi Action/Thriller that will twist & bend the genres in ways never imagined. Either that or a low budget comedy :-)

Caparella would be a heist movie to me.
It's mysterious and since it is a non-existant word it could be a password to something, a safe etc.
It could also be a cool-looking, sleek action/spy movie.
Set in Europe of course.
I don't get it with the sarcastic comments on thsi page. he's just asking a question, folks.

I was thinking that too, then I thought Caparella could be the name of a mushroom. It has a nice sound to it though.

Thing is, even a joke comment can answer the question, or spark off a useful new thought. No one's being insulting.

I prefer "Carapella". But that's just me.
I usually like the one word titles. I would have no idea what this movie would be about; certainly not a big budget blockbuster - but does have an intelligent sense to it.
