I'm looking for a writer's workshop or retreat with the following characteristics: taking place in Seattle during the summer of 2009 or 2010, no longer than a week and no shorter than a weekend, involving science fiction/fantasy/interstices genres, and for semi-pros or people who are nearly ready to be published (not beginners or established pros). I have done some Googling, but would prefer recommendations from actual human beings.

Clarion takes places in June, but it's six weeks.

Your best bet is to look for SF conventions in the summer in Seattle and see who's doing the workshps; they'll be no more than a couple of hours though.

I got nothin' and it looks like blacbird answered the question in the Roundtable. (btw, we tend not to like starting the same thread in multiple forums).

But :hi:

Just move to Seattle. By March you will be totally depressed and housebound and your writing will be supercharged.

Where to you think Carver and Cobain got so nihilistic?

I live in Tucson and seek out rainy days!

It's not in Seattle, but Portland isn't far:

You may also see if there is a local writers club that fits your genre and personality. Seattle should have several. They're good source for retreat information, education, networking and inspiration.

Good Luck!

I put on the Iron Springs Writers' Retreat - the next one is this week, but it's too late to get a story in for workshopping. We'll be scheduling next June at this year's retreat. You can find out more at www.IronSpringsWritersRetreat.com (http://www.IronSpringsWritersRetreat.com)

It's a couple hours from Seattle, but well worth the drive. Over half the attendees are published. We ask for people to pitch in and donate to cover the cost of the cabins for the Writer Gurus and it's a potluck.

You can also email me at writersweekend at hotmail dot com. I know it says on the website that it's by invitation only, but it's easy to get invited, just drop me a line!

That looks very cool! I'd love to apply for next year. Thank you.

Thanks, but I generally stop writing when I'm depressed. Then I stop doing everything else.

If you haven't been to Centrum at Ft. Worden State Park, you might want to try it. They hold a week-long writers workshop every summer in July. It's not specifically for sf writers, but they get a lot of participants, and the instructors are usually top NW writers. Or you can attend for just a weekend and pay by the day. They also run lectures and readings open to the public, for free, during the week. They have dormitory accomodations, and a hostel on the grounds for an even cheaper stay. The area is beautiful, and a remote-feeling getaway with downtown Port Townsend only minutes away. I think you can get there by ferry, too.

Their website is www.centrum.org/writing.

How about Bellingham (http://www.almaalexander.com/weekend.php)?
