What are your favorite mainstream/contemporary books that were turn into a movie? Did you think the book or the movie was better?

The World According to Garp
The Wonder Boys
October Sky (although it's actually a creative non-fiction...)
House of Sand and Fog -- but the book is better
Cider House Rules -- the book is better as well

A.S. Byatt's Possession is one of my favorite books, but I really didn't like the movie. I didn't even finish watching it. It just fell flat for me-- the characters, the story... all of it.

Big Fish is a great choice. I liked the book, but loved the movie. I thought the movie was more emotionally powerful than the book; it was also so beautiful to look at.

Where the Heart is was pretty good. I feel the book and the movie were both evenly good.
