A tech. question and help, please

For some reason, lately, our computer has been flashing a gray and green box that says main menu, etc. We've tried closing it by clicking the buttons on the side of the computer and sometimes it takes it away, but often not. Anyone know how to fix that? Thanks much.

This is happening when? At any time? What kind of computer? -- it could be the monitor's adjustment menu

ETA: if it is the monitor menu, this is something that happens when the monitor is damaged or senile. Best bet is replace the monitor. Maybe the local computer shop has some used ones cheap

ETA2: When you say "buttons on the side of the computer", do you mean buttons on the thing with the picture screen (the monitor)? Or on the box that has the CD drive and stuff in it (the computer)? Just askin' 'cause some peeps do get confused about this.

What do the menu options say? (To help us troubleshooters determine what exactly is going on.

Though, I'm guessing it's probably the monitor menu (seconding Matera's response.)

Monitors, like anything else electronic, do go bad. Might be time for a replacement.

Thx much, Matera & Clair. Yep, it happens off & on. It's a Gateway and Mr. Susie thinks it's the monitor, too, unfortunately. Thing w. the picture screen. Much appreciation.
