A best. Maybe you can put the kid in the corner? Or draw the kid under the tree? But the tree adds alot.

Given that my criticism relates to the fonts, I'd have to say neither - or both. But between the two, the artwork for version A is much more compelling.

Take that for what it's worth. :)

While B looks more professional, the picture in A works better with the title. Much better.

It's hard for me to tell because you have them as terrible quality gifs, but I think A is much better.

I guess it's a tree thing.

A - there's a tree in the title, so a tree goes in the pic.

B

The tree fits the title, but B is a much more appealing cover. Maybe an inserted image of the tree in one corner??

A. Children are creepy.

There's something about B that I really like... but the positioning / spacing of the text isn't too agreeable.

A is set out better... but B grabs me more...

B. Trees are so over-done. But I don't like the children stuck to the title....

A. I know trees are overdone (:) Maestro) but i'd be more inclined to pick up the book and take a look with A as the cover, than B.

A. Definitely A. Though I think I'd like a combination of A and B even more.

It was a tough call for me. I'd say the A cover with the B tint. If it has to be either/or, I'd go with A.

A, just the way it is, the tree alone and a gloomy sky.

A. With some elements of B (the top boy)

A by miles. The layout of B is horrible.

I gotta say A too. I think if you add lightning to along with it, it might be an added touch. Just my $0.2.

Here's a suggestion....take A and apply the same sepia monochromatic treatment that B has to it.

See....I like the composition of A better, but the muted sepia tone of B looks way more classy.

I found A to be too much in your eye, too obvious: there you have the tree and that's it. B is much better because it leaves something to the reader imagination. It raises more questions, while A it just offers the tree and that's all.

Also B has an advantage because of the human element (it kind of draws it the reader to find out what's really happening to those children, it's appeals more to the emotional side...).

That's why I think B is better.

I would have went B with a landslide...or a bullet. I see a lot have chose A, but really...I liked absolutely everything about B.

A. I liked the idea of the river because it's a part of a trilogy, but I don't like not having a tree on the cover if there's a tree in the title. The tree obviously has significance or it wouldn't be in the title. If the tree isn't significant, I'd rename the book and go with B. I like the picture better, but the kids better have a huge role in the book, then.

Definitely B- looks much more professional, while A, as it stands, looks POD. B tells me more about your story, looks interesting, while A is just, er a tree, and since I got the tree thing from the title, I don't think it can convey much more with a picture. That said, you could jazz the tree pic up a bit with, as someone mentioned, a sepia filter on it- if you are doing this yourself and don't have the software to turn it sepia, just let me know and I'll help out if I can!

Also, nearly forgot- B looks more like a genre cover, whereas A tells me nothing about it- am I about to read fantasy, comic, romance etc

I say B, for the same reasons noted by others.

It's professional look, also, with the children it draws you into the storyline more than the plain tree...sitting there...alone...under dim light...in the shadows.

Anyway, I say B! *lol* :D

I like Cover A. It doesn't offer much about the story, so the prospective buyer has a lot of room to form his or her own impressions. I'd buy Cover A book, not Cover B.

B

I say this precisely because the word 'tree' is in the title and there is one on cover A. We know there's a tree in the title; we don't need to beat the reader over the head with it by showing a photo of one, too. They're not stupid.

I MUCH prefer B - I felt pulled in and emotionally involved. I'd check the book out if I saw it on a shelf. I would probably prefer it without the boy to the left of 'tree'.

A left me cold - I wouldn't bother to pick it up in a bookshop.

I guess I am stupid. If there's a tree in the title, I want a tree on the cover. If there's a child in the title, I want a child on the cover.

Of course, I never have and never will buy a book because of the cover. It's what you find between the covers that counts. The title is a heck of a lot more important than the cover. So is jacket copy. And page one is more important than everyting else put together.

The cover is a picture. I'm concerned with the words.

B makes me think it's something from OPRAH's book picks.

42 OPINIONS... Thank you all very much. I took your words to heart and created a cover using one child and the tree. Maybe thats the best of both worlds. I set up a poll in this same forum WRITING NOVELS column showing COVER C and listing the ballot box. :Hail:
