Proofreading Symbols

I have seen so many symbols out there and I am not sure which one to use.

I saw there is a new British Standard, the BS 5261, but that's the European standard... can I still use it in the U.S.?

Which symbols do you use? Is there any good resource I could refer to?

Any help would be nice.
