The thread on "Great books" makes me wonder what a great book really is. I have read some books that I never wanted to stop reading, but mostly when I was a child. I guess that is why there are so many series and sequels out there.

I just read Ender's Shadow, which I enjoyed as much as Ender's Game, so I checked a couple more in the series out and found them to be completely ordinary.

Can you think of any books you didn't want to stop? Would that make them a great book? Does an enjoyable read add up to a great book? And finally, what about sequels? Do they often disappoint?

FYI, I have read most of the 20 listed and have my own opinions about them. None of them fit in with books I didn't want to stop. But anything by Jane Austen does--wrong century, though.

Hardest to put down? Mack Reynolds - Trample An Empire Down.
Loving the continuation? J. K. Rowling's Potter Books.
Upset it ended and wished it kept going? And actually, now thanks to other writers after his death, it is...The Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov

Books end the way they should, and continue when they should. So far, I haven't been disappointed by my favorite writers.
