For the first time in eleven years, I have put my resume out. I received a call back this morning for a potential Technical Writer contract. In my cover letter I mentioned that I have writing samples if requested, which of course I still have to gather.

Since I have been working for a consulting company, I have samples of different client documentation from a variety of business environments. I am trying to figure out the best way to present these communications. I don't want to leave the clients' company information available. Does anyone know the proper way to handle modifying the documents?

In addition, what writing samples do you use? I am going to streamline the samples for each inquiry. Is this the best route? Can anyone think of writing samples that should always be included?

I am taking it as a good sign that I sent my resume out late yesterday afternoon and I have already received a response. This is quite nerve-wracking though.

I appreciate any help I receive.

If I have it, I show samples as closely-related to what they might be looking for as far as content goes, first. But I also bring other things that I may be particularly proud of, or show diversity of skill/talent/experience.

Often, in tech writing, a writer may only have books to show. I bring them, but I say I can't leave them, because I only have a few left. People are often okay with that. If you want, you can copy a few pages if it isn't proprietary, but it probably won't be necessary. Is that what you are referring to?

Thank you for your response. Yes, you answered my questions and I appreciate the help.

It is odd for me since up until now I have been working as a database programmer/helpdesk technician. However, since it is a small business, I function as a technical writer as well. (Actually, I cover or have covered all the positions within the company except owner.) Having experience in all aspects of the development process has its benefits. Now that I am looking for work, I might as well go for what I want and get into a technical writing position full time.

ETA: Apparently I have a marketable skill set as a technical writer. I received my second response of the day. Right now they are coming in as fast as I get my resume out. I am only sharing because it makes me feel good.

Thank you again for your time.
