If your in San Diego this month, don't be shy, come on bye.

Not this year. I hope to get to it at some point, but realistically, it's a few years away right now.
I'm waiting for the book and manga fairs that are coming up, soon.

Sounds good.
I have been hearing the ALA (Librarians) is where a lot is going on. They are just starting to embrace graphic novels.

I wanted to go--my comic's up for an Eisner!--but the Pope couldn't get a hotel room in San Diego at this late date, and even though people would let me crash on their couches, the plane tickets are prohibitive.
On the other hand, I just finished two cons in rapid succession, and there's not an ounce of extrovert left in my entire body, so it's probably for the best.

Wow, and Eisner. That is awesome. What category are you in.
If you ever go to SD, the Hostel is very nice, and I always meet amazing art staying there.

I'm Ursula Vernon of "Digger" under "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition."
I have very little chance of winning--some of the others in the category are alarmingly talented--but for once it really is an honor just to be nominated!

I've heard the same, too. But I can only comment on the libraries here -- I've not seen many graphic novels for loan, but I've not looked very hard since any graphic novels here are usually sold, not loaned.
The book and manga fairs coming up are some of the biggest expos in Hong Kong. They attract tens of thousands each year -- customers, trade partners and businesses.
Both last five days each. And particularly for the book fair, you see people towing suitcases -- sometimes the hand-carry size, occasionally something larger.
Signings also go on at both expos. (The manga one is way more fun in this respect, since Cosplay is also a huge part of it.)
I'm looking forward to both. (^_^)

My husband and I are going, so I will look for your booth! We'll have our four month old daughter in tow (gulp). If for some reason we don't have a chance to see you, have fun, though, and many happy sales!
Me, I'm looking forward to the SNAKES ON A PLANE presentation in Hall H. hee hee.

Snakes, yikes.
I usually don't make it to many panels since I am always "on stage." But please come to our little back corner of the hall.

And having just said I won't be going to Comicon, suddenly my agent is flying me out there! Yikes!
Now I have to find a floor to crash on...
Anyway, I have no idea where I'll be, but I'll be there!

As long as it isn't the Pickwick hotel. Yikes! Not a happy fun place to be staying.
I am at the Hostel, it's always fun.

I...don't really know! My comic's for sale at the Sofawolf Press table, so I may be lurking around there, but since this is very last minute, I don't have a table of my own or anything, but I don't know if my agent has any plans, either...

I've been going to comic-con for years. (My husband used to shoot their commercials back in the day.) It's gotten incredibly huge and overwhelming. Last year I think there were 60k people attending and lines around the block. My husband is going, but I'm still on the fence. Here's some advice:
Bring water and pocket snacks. The convention center concessions are ridiculously expensive.
Wear comfortable shoes (and maybe some elbow pads). The con takes up the entire convention center. The dealers room is the WHOLE bottom floor.
Give yourself lots of time to get from place to place.
Be sure to leave the convention center and go into the Gaslamp district for at least one meal. There are a ton of wonderful restaurants crammed into just a few city blocks.
Parking is horrible during the con. Take public transportation when possible. The trolley has a stop just across the street from the convention center. (I park for free at old town and take the trolley in.)
There is a sort of mezzanine with a big plate glass window that looks down on the dealers room (North-west side I think?). There are some concession stands and tables there. It is the absolute best place to take a break from the throng and people-watch.
Have fun! If I go, I'll look up your booths.
And Ursula...congratulations on your nomination!

Great advise. Last year there was about 12000 folks in the hall over 5 days. This year should be more.
I have gone about 3 times before and this is what I found.
- Go to Ralphs (walking distance to the hall) and get a nice sandwich or make one at home DO NOT BUY CONVENTION FOOD
- if your a pro, get a pro badge. You don't have to wait in the super line. I know folks that waited in line for an hour, after the hall opened to get it. Pro's get in 15 min earlier and of course being an exhibitor rocks.
- The Atrium where the free-be table (up stairs) is a better place to meet.
- on busy days, don't try to cross the hall. Exit into the lobby and walk down and re-enter. Trust me, the crowd gets nasty on Fri-Saturday and just trying to make it past the Star Wars fans is enough to make you faint.
- When it's busy it is a good time to retreat to the back areas of the hall, away from the buzz booths. Small press is where some of the great new stuff is, and check out artist alley too.

I'm going through the Saturday schedule to pick out panels to attend. There are so many great author panels I almost can't stand it! George R.R. Martin, Peter S. Beagle, Naomi Novik, discussions about urban fantasy and fantasy in general, spotlights on authors...this is just too exciting for words, ha ha!!!!
Deity bless Mysterious Galaxy bookstore, whose owner facilitates the panels. I hope they carry one of my (future) books some day. Could you imagine being an author doing one of these discussions at Comic-Con? Hot diggity!

Will you all be posting a report (with pics!) about the con? Would love to read about it from different POVs.

So, who went? How did you like it? (I passed on it this year. Too hot, too crowded.)
One of my co-workers has volunteered in registration for 11 years. She said there were about 19k people there on Wednesday's preview night (open to pros & 4-day pre-reg only). They don't have the full count for this year yet, but last year she said there were 120k attendees.
My DH went on Friday. He got his badge quickly but said the dealer's room was wall-to-wall people. He left after a couple of hours.
I suspect comic-con has become a victim of its own popularity.

It was...lunacy. I mean, I work at home, I can go a day or two at a time without seeing anybody but my husband, so it's possible I'm turning into a recluse, but that many people, day after day, was exhausting. Any natural gregariousness I may have possessed has been stomped flat.
I finally got home yesterday, and even though I had a good time, and I'm glad I went, I feel like I've been scraped raw.

Yeah, for Snakes On A Plane.
Seriously. Snakes....on a.....plane....
I read the synopsis, thinking it must be about more than snakes being on a plane, and...nope. I'm not sure why everyone's so jazzed about this movie, it looks like a bad B-movie. I mean, it sounds less entertaining than Plan 9 From Outer Space...

It's already a camp classic.
I read this pretty interesting article in Entertainment Weekly this week (featuring Sam L. on the cover--they also did a little feature on Comic-Con) that showed how some films gained notoreity and big box office sales through internet advertisement, and the power all of these film forums and websites have on the industry. SoaP is expected to be one of those films. Any film that has a fanbase big enough to demand a line change for Samuel L. Jackson, and then receive it--is a pretty big deal for a small budget flick.

I read the same article, oddly enough.
What I don't get is why anyone cares. It sounds like a really hoaky movie (which may or may not be the point) but it isn't out yet, and at least to me, it sounds not at all enjoyable. The storyline for Army of Darkness (shop smart, shop s-mart!) may be horrible, but it's a cool fun movie.
I think I probably just missed the boat on Snakes on a Plane. Honestly, I think the title would have been better served attached to a pornographic film.

When I first read the news about snakes way back when jackson took the role without even reading the script, i thought it sounded dumb. the more i thought about it, the more i liked the idea of jackson fighting snakes on a plane.
then boom! the internet was jumping, there was talk of refilming scenes to make them bloodier and to include that already classic line "get those motherf-n snakes off my motherf-n plane."
That's the power of audience.
It will undoubtedly be a dumb movie, but possibly a cult film. hell, ed wood has a grand cult following. talk about dumb movies, but it's about the audience in this case and not about a good movie.
i'm sure it'll be highly quotable, which is what makes cult films really work. One of the dumbest, worthless movies I've ever seen was Napoleon Dynomite, yet there are times when I think of a quote from that movie that fits a situation. I'll never own it, I'll never watch it again.
But some people love it.

Haha. Well, I'm not about to see it unless in rental form with copious amounts of alcohol.
The little blurb in the mag about Comic-Con peaked my interest in the whole shebang. I didn't realize it's more like cult hits than comics. But in addition to films like Spiderman, Superman, Transformers, they had panels on Harry Potter, Lost, Veronica Mars, etc. Anyone know how they decide which mediums are invited?

I like Napoleon Dynamite, Ed Wood movies, and those campy movies starring Bruce Campbell. Every summer, my wife and I watch movies like Locusts! and those really campy disaster made-for-TV movies. I love 'em.
So I think, when it comes to Snakes on a Plan, it just missed me. I figured this was more my fault than anything, which is why I haven't said much about it.
