50's Fiction - Where is it now?
Back in the 50's there were some types of fiction that were called "Dime Store Novels", "Pulp Fiction", "Trashy Fiction" (or Trashy Novels). Do those still exist today with a different classification? Anyone know? Puma

My novel is set in the fifties...but I think you mean the books like "Police Detective" magazines or whatever...the ones with the nasty photos of dead people and crime scenes. I heard of those and how people were so disgusted by them that they made a big stink over the content and they were removed from the public.

Some have tried to rekindle interest in a modern version of "pulp fiction". For example, Stephen King's book, The Colorado Kid. And Amazing Stories. I'm not sure how successful any of them have been. I think it's only been marginal.
I believe the heyday for Dime Store Novels was earlier than the fifties, more like the thirties and forties.

The original name for pulp fiction books was dime novels (reference to the price) not dime store and yes, they pre-date the Fifties by several decades.
Although there is some retro interest in dime style novels, current publishing trends aren't anywhere close.

I think the market for cheap, lurid fiction has largely been overtaken by television. ;)

Part of my reason for asking was that I was curious as to whether the Romance, Horror, Erotica, and to some extent Sci-Fi genres had replaced the old dime store, trash, and pulp tags. Puma

I think the only pulp fiction in my mind would be comic books...the graphic and violent ones...not a straight forward genre novel.

I was thinking of pulp novels like "Sargasso From Space" or "Escape from Planet X!" or those sort of books. The kind of thin books that ACE put out quite a lot of, and sometimes did double books of (I have a first-edition double ACE printing of an Andre NOrton book, and a Philip K. Dick book; My wife has a huge library of pulp fiction Ace sci-fi novels, almost a complete Andre Norton library).
I don't know if that's what you meant, but it's what I got. I like that style, and I liked that they were generally thin books. I read them and move on, dancing happily between them. It can be fun.

You're probably right, I'm only 28 so I don't know much about the books back then. I know King did mention walking around with paperbacks in his pocket of sci-fi genre.

I still do that. It's the only reason I buy paperback copies of books (I much prefer trade paperbacks; it's easier on my eyes). Yesterday, I had Asimov's "Second Foundation" tucked in my pocket. I read it when I'm walking, when I'm in line, when I'm at work (carefully!).

Pulp fiction of the 1930's and to a lesser extent the 1920's was a reaction to the public's belief that police forces were thugs under the control of robber-baron businessmen (there may have been some truth to that), and/or thugs in their own right (diddo). Therefore, the lone protagonist was forced to "save fair damsel" mostly by himself and maybe a few (semi-) trusted friends. Pulp fiction was a variation of the Quest for The Holy Grail theme. Pulp fiction was replaced by Westerns of the early Nuclear Age (i.e., to what extent can a single entity use major lethal force to ensure social peace) which in turn were replaced by the Spy Novels of Cold War.
Pulp fiction is still available in the form of Nick Carter novels, et al, and Clive Cussler, et all, and by some stretch, the novels of Robert Parker, et all.

From age 13 to 40 I carried paperbacks in my back pocket most of the time. Usually sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries, or historical fiction or non-fiction. It's probably why my back still hurts from time to time - like sitting on a fat wallet will torque your back over the long run. (Physicians who treat back problems talk about performing back pocket walletectomies, you know.) I had dozens of the Ace Doubles. It was great fiction, why not bring it back? 50,000--75,000 words.
Regards,
Scott

I agree. I love that stuff.
The best example of Pulp Fiction (which isn't actually pulp fiction at all, really) was Frank Millar's "Sin City" series. Especially the very early volumes. Brilliant.

I'm a girl, so I just stuffed a paperback in the book bag and carried it. I was always reading Stephen King or VC Andrews. I prefer the hardcover books since I only read at home now. Where I live...if you read while you walk, you end up falling over into a creek or river. No longer can I read on trips now...I am the only driver of my family (fiance is epileptic).

I recently saw Stephen King's pulp fiction novel..... Kind of an unusual departure for him...but that's a good thing right?

I've been reading the Hard Case Crime offerings (which Stephen King's The Colorado Kid is a part of) and thoroughly enjoying them. Except for The Colorado Kid. Quite frankly, that book would never have been published if the author had been anyone else. He doesn't solve the mystery! Who else could get away with that and get published?

I don't know if that's what you meant, but it's what I got. I like that style, and I liked that they were generally thin books. I read them and move on, dancing happily between them. It can be fun.
Baen Books has almost single-handedly revived the genre.

Republishes the old, accepts work from the veterans, and hawks the new authors. A good proportion is fast moving, ray guns and spaceships stuff, albiet with a milsf slant.
