Auto-Buy
No, we're not talking about cars here. *s*

What authors are on your auto-buy list? You see their new release and you get it, no questions asked.

Why do you do that? Are you ever disappointed?

---------

For mainstream/contemporary, my auto-buy is Jennifer Weiner. I like her conversational style and I'm pretty well guaranteed a good story (IMO) when I buy one of hers. I know she officially classified as chick lit, but since she's had a couple books that weren't quite so much chick lit, I call her mainstream.

For fantasy, I have a few auto-buys. Mercedes Lackey, David Eddings, George R.R. Martin (paperback, though, don't have the budget for hardcovers), and Robin Hobb.

In recent years my only auto-buy was Michael Crichton but I was not happy with Timeline and have not yet bought his most recent book.

Prior to that my auto-buy was Arthur Hailey (Airport, Hotel, the Moneychangers). I don't think I was ever disappointed in anything he published.

Why do I do that? Answer: because I'm pretty well assured of a good read that is both informational and entertaining. Puma

That's hard.
My must-buy-books are usually classics or for reference. For example:
anything by Elizabeth David or Dorothy Hartley for reference use.

Usually Terry Pratchett's if they are about Ank-Morepork. 'Going Postal' gave me the giggles on the bus. He is a clever satirical writer.

Terry Greenwood and Michael Pearce for witty and intelligent historicals.

Betsy Tobin if I could ever find her new books.

Until recently I've been to poor to auto-buy everything by any author. Though I do have a lot of John Irving's books, and have never been disappointed. I've gotten a lot of Stephen King out from the library if that counts, but I own a couple as well.

That's basically how my bookshelf looks I guess, a few from each of my favorite authors and the rest I've read from the library.

Stephen King - because he is my favorite of all time. I'm a fanatic, so I love all of his stuff.

Andrew Vachss - my favorite crime writer. He never disappoints.

Chuck Palahniuk - "Fight Club" is near the top of my favorites list. I like some of his books more than others, but I'm still loyal.

I read in just about every genre, but my auto-buy authors for mainstream/contemporary would probably be Richard Russo and Stewart O'Nan. I like their well-written stories, clear descriptive language, and their novels always seem to stay with me for awhile after I finish.

My wife just bought 2 of Weiner's novels (In Her Shoes and Bad in Bed). If they're not chick-lit, I might give one a shot.

I am also going to take a shot on Chuck Palahnuik, Lee_OC. I loved the Fight Club movie and a few of his titles interest me. Any recommendations on which one to start with?

Anyone read Richard Price (Clockers)? Another author I have been considering.

Thanks.

Re: Palahniuk:

I really liked "Lullaby" and "Survivor." My friend said his favorite is "Choke," and I thought that was decent.

What do you mean "if they're not chick-lit"? Give it a shot anyway. There's nothing wrong w/ chick-lit. ;)

One teensy correction. The second book you're referring to is Good in Bed instead of "Bad." :)

They are actually marketed as chick lit, but are shelved under the general heading of "Novels" in most bookstores I've seen them in. You might want to sneak a peek at them to decide for sure, though.

Oh, and if you've seen the movie for In Her Shoes, don't let it be a deterrent from reading the book. The movie is OK, in my opinion, but they had to cut so much of the book from it that as far as the sub-story about the sister goes, it's pretty different.

Again, that's just my opinion.

Sorry, I haven't read anything by Richard Price, so I'm no help there.

I auto-buy stephen king, but I'll usually research Koontz, Crichton, and some other authors to see if their new book sounds good. For instance, I rarely buy Koontz, but I decided to buy The Husband because it sounded good--and Focus Features plan on making it a film.

I think I've read one of Crichton's. Just doesn't appeal to me, really. I've read several of Stephen King's, but not enough to put him on auto-buy. :)

Yeah, the more I read (and the older I get) the less author's like Clancy, Crichton, and Grisham appeal to me. I feel like a lot of their writing and story ideas simply aren't as good as their older stuff. Outside of mainstream/contemporary, Stephen King (horror) and Dennis Lehane (mystery) remain on my auto-buy list.

That's odd, KPM. When I passed 50, Crichton was the only author I'd take a chance on without some digging. Other than that, I've pretty much dropped fiction entirely (including Crichton in more recent years)(and with the exception of a period look at one of the classics I'd never read previously). Puma

My only autobuys nowadays are Andy McNabb (thriller), Lee Child (thriller/suspense), Suzanne Brockmann (romantic/military/suspense), and Richard Morgan (sci fi). Although I have to admit that I havent finished the latest Lee Child yet, I found it kind of disappointing. Definitely not one of his best. And the last Suzanne Brockmann was disappointing too. I think she was forced to write it too fast. However, that wont stop me from buying the next ones they publish. Every author has a bad book in them, and I won't hold it against them until they repeat it.

I have a few auto buy authors.

Stephen King
James Rollins
Preston & Child
Steve Alten
Keith Ablow
Michael Marshall
Laurell K. Hamilton

Any time I see a book buy these authors I will buy it. The only one of these authors that has come close to letting me down is Hamilton but she redeems herself with the next book. I will say that King did let me down with The Colorado Kid but made up for it with Cell. Everything by Rollins is a must for me, his books just get better with each new one. Alten is the same way. Preston & Child's series with Pendergast in them are some of the most interesting books I have read. Ablow's Clevenger series shows us the gritty side of pschiatry and let's you know that even they are not perfect and many may be more screwed up than you are.

Koontz is starting to become an auto buy but he has let me down more than once and I wait for his paperbacks to come out before I buy them, usually. It all depends on the book.

I've read a couple by Hamilton and King, but ... I don't know. I like them, but not enough to make them auto-buy. :)

Carl Hiaasen - and I have never been disappointed!
Also Stephen King and Sue Ann Jaffarian.
