What a cool title. :)
Ha! I saw the thread title and immediately thought "Dread Pirate Roberts." :tongue
Writing the end is my favorite part. I have conquered the middle, and I have a solid finish line just waiting for me to cross it. I wrote the last 80 pages of one manuscript in three nights. They were the scenes I had been imagining since I began the project, and once released, there was no stopping them.

I flew through the ending of my first three books. The last third of my second book took four days to write (about 10k/day).
I don't know whether or not it helps to know the outcome of the story before you get there. I surprised myself with quite a few events in my second book, and the surprises kept my energy level up. Then again, it can be comfortable knowing exactly where you're going to end up. My current WIP is at this point. I know what's going to happen in the last 50 pages, and it brings a certain satisfaction to be so, well ... certain.

The middle is exhausting, because you know all the stuff that has to happen, for some of it, you even know how it happens...but sometimes, the words just aren't in their places yet. The beginning and the ending are frequently passion and flash. I think the middle of the novel, the long stretch, is really where writing is not an art, but rather a craft, like carpentry.

peedee- wow, how i can relate! i have the ending planned but it's taking me forever to get there. in my case i think it is due to the fact that i am entering the darker phases of the book where my characters need to suffer and do bad things. i also have a character who is descending into madness, which takes a lot of consideration on how to show it without being cliched. MUCH more difficult than the sweet romantic early scenes...like you said, all "passion and flash"!
but i'm trying not to beat myself up about it. IT WILL BE WRITTEN! :)
