Is there a name for the body of dubious lore that hopeful and beginning writers pass around to each other? You know, like advising each other to use Poor Man's Copyright, or that it's vital to have your work Professionally Edited before submitting, or that other people may Steal Your Ideas?

I'm not meaning to sneer or slam - everyone who spreads these ideas honestly believes them and does so in the hopes of helping others. It's just that I need a term to describe this folklore, so I can tag new examples as I run across them.
Is there a phrase or word already in use?

Secondarily, would the passing on of slightly garbled writing advice relating directly to style (a recent example--not on AW--was a writer told to never use the word 'somehow', after using it in a character's thoughts: 'somehow she would get revenge') come under the same heading, or should it get its own designation?

I would probably just call them "writing myths".

I have heard it called 'writer lore' referred to both true and untrue beliefs that aspiring writers pass around.

Urban legends for the Unwary Writer - poor guys.

:D I haven't heard of a specific name other than misinformation.

I think 'publishing myths' would be more accurate than 'writing myths.' Not really sure though.

As for the 'style advice,' I'd just call that 'bad writing advice.'

Misinformation sounds good to me -- it's what I usually use. I've got another vote over here from the peanut gallery for "Old Scribe's Tales", too. ;)

How about "FUD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FUD)" for at least some of it? I've certainly seen more than one person spread misinformation that whipped a bunch of others into a frenzy of fear and self-doubt.

Old Scribe's Tales... kind of rhymes with... oh, I get it. Yeah, I like that one.

How about bull ****?

Yep, that's the one. Good lord, I'll buy you a beer now. :D

You could also call it "dribble" or "idiocy" or "Lemming Syndrom"
