Hmm. . . I wouldn't think so. But unless the Lulu book does extremely well (a la Paolini), I wouldn't mention it as a published credit in any future Query letters. But I don't think it would do any harm to just publish it like you are saying. Anyone else?

I think it would probably have little or no effect. If you wanted to ensure that you could use separate pen names for different publishing venues. I know there is a dogma about just throwing out something that doesn't set New York on fire, but I've never really understood that.

Do you mean throw out as in trash it, or throw out as in stick it on Lulu or similar? If the latter, I'd really like to hear what you have to say against it.

Throw it out as in trash. I must be pretty bad at expressing myself as a lot of people seem to think I am anti-self publishing when I am a pretty strong supporter--I spent time I could be writing webmastering a self-POD book review site.

I can't see how it would hurt.

As long as you don't mind doing the work to market the book. Realize too that it may be only 30 or 40 people who end up reading it, after all your efforts.

The only ones that hurt are things like scams because it can taint you.

Thanks, everyone! I was worried that an agent might frown on it, as I might no longer technically be a "debut novelist" (I know in all practicality I would, but not by definition.)
