View Full Version : Regional AW groups

Note from Foinah : I merged these two threads. This is also Maryn's Map for regional AWers.
The continuity (chronological order) may look a bit wonky - everything is still here ;)
***************
I have been keeping current with the possibility of an AW retreat and am very excited about the possibility!
Along with being a novice writer, I am also a beginning photographer and love it! I frequent flickr.com and that is where our photo club gallaries our pics. There are people in flickr from all over the world. It's amazing! The reason I bring up flickr is that besides all the great forums that they have, they also have groups of flickrites (?) that meet together. Many are just one flickr junky finding more in their local area and getting together. So, I was wondering....................is there a way that we could start our own little AW get-togethers by using this AW forum?
I live in Mississippi and I've often wondered how many AWers live close by and what would be the possibility of starting a local AW writing group?
Anyone else interested in stuff like that?
Also, if there were a full scale AW retreat somewhere, local groups could work together for transportation and such.
**************************
Maryn's post : page 5, post #106
I started a list of the people who'd given their location in the Regional AW Groups thread. Then I started adding the locations of people who have it in their profiles or mention it in a thread I happened to see.
Unfortunately, there are many boards I skip. I don't want to leave anybody out, so if you want to be on the list and are not yet listed, post your location here in this thread.
My intent is to edit, adding new names and locations and correcting my inevitable mistakes, a few times a week. In theory, you'll find a very recent version of the list as this first message, rather than having to wade through replies which haven't yet been added.
This should make it easier to find AWers who live nearby and arrange to meet.
This list includes all AW members who have said where they live on any public message. Afterthought: Although I've added some, how about making a point of not adding anyone but yourself unless you're positive the person you're adding has said where they live in a public message? Some people may have shared their locations with individuals they trusted but not want themselves included on this list, and I'd like to respect everybody's privacy.

Check this (http://www.frappr.com/absolutewriters) out, then stick a virtual pin in your location. If most AWers did this, it'd be easy to see who's close to who, right?

Any of y'all Virginians going to VA Festival of the Book? the CNU conference in NN the end of the month? the April 28 SCBWI workshop in Richmond? the ChLA conference in NN in June? the James River Writers Conference in September?
For an AW get-together, Richmond or C'ville would work for me.
I couldn't access the map--don't have the right version of Flash, so my dot isn't there.
I'm headed to the SW VA Writer's Workshop at VTech in May! I've added it to the AW calendar - May 19th. :D

One of the big reasons I'm attracted to AW is because of the international presence. I'm more interested in meeting with AW members from around the world, than just sticking with those within easy driving distance. I mean, I'm already part of a local writing group. It's not that I'm uninterested in other regional writers, but I don't want to limit myself to interacting only with them. Just a personal preference, though.

Chicago – I actually posted this Writing Groups (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57983) thread around the same time. It’s something I’m interested in. I’ve been a beta reader and editor to a couple of people in the past and learned from the experience.

My husband's sister and her family live there. And a friend of mine from university and his family are there. Fahim and I were there last November for a few days. Does that count?
You could also join Fahim and I in our little regional group. We'd let ya in. Really!
Um, bring chocolate? :D
There's a new thread in FAQs (up above) with ideas about regional AW groups - thought I'd bump this back up to the top of the listings. Puma

Hi Stew!
Yeah, a number of us, myself included, are going to be at Archon31 (North American Science Fiction Convention) (http://www.archonstl.org/31/index2.html) at the Gateway Center in Collinsville from August 2 through 5. Some of us are flying in on the first, but we'll be bushed, I'm sure. As we get closer and our plans solidify, we'll definitely have to arrange to get together at some point while we're there, perhaps at some spot near the con where you don't need to be an attendee to get in.
Stew21

YAY! AWers in my town! There's a lot near there. I am VERY near Collinsville. Who knows maybe I'll attend the con too, if not we'll find a time and place to meet. I found the website, I'm going to check it out.

The things we'll do to avoid doing what we ought to!
I know where lots more AW people live, in general anyway. (I swear, that wasn't me parked outside your house. It only looked like me.) However, I listed only the members who've chimed in here on where they live, to make it easier for people to connect with one another.
I don't know about anybody else, but I'm finding the Frappr map unusable. I click on something, and it scrolls thousands of miles away from what I clicked on to open someone else's profile.

A great many people at AW do indeed hail from those states. I've only included those who have said where they live in this thread. I wasn't sure it was cool to retrieve something a person said at AW six months or a year ago, on another subject altogether, that happened to mention where he or she lived. It felt kind of invasive, you know?

CrazyNance and I live in Cobourg, Ontario. I'm willing to drive us a reasonable distance to meet up with other AWers. I used to drive from here to Owen Sound and back in a day just to visit my Aunt for a few hours - about 300 km one way.
I see that Janetbellinger is from Orangeville - we could meet at the big box mall at the corner of the 400 and the 89, or better yet, the MacDonalds across the street

I knew it was only the respondents to this thread. I just like to try and extract irony whenever and wherever I can.Oh, no offense taken whatsoever.
I'm presently leaning toward including the location of anybody who has it in their profile or has said it on a board where I happened to see it. Alas, this means many poets and non-fiction writers will not be included, since I rarely venture into their territories.
Pardon my French (which is probably butchered), but c'est la vie, eh?

Quick explanation - Scotland, England and Wales are separate countries, but collectively known as Britain.
Add N.Ireland into the mix and collectively they're known as the UK.
If it were me, I'd list all four countries separately to avoid confusion. If the city's in England, that's what I'd put. I know, it seems like there are a million different names for what appear to be the same countries, but...if there's a border, it's a different country. :D
They built a wall to keep us Scots out you know. :D

I'm working on the assumption that everyone's as lazy as I am, or at least busy with things that make scrolling through scads of messages a royal pain.
My intention is to revise the list that's the first message in the thread, so nobody needs to look beyond it, except for the last page for any additions that haven't yet been added.
Hmm, I should note up to what message number and date I've revised, shouldn't I?
