Does anyone one know of a good book dealing more with Bison Hunting as opposed to two denim clad gunslingers swappin' lead on a dusty street at high noon?

Fiction or non-fiction? I think Matt Braun might have done something on Billy Dixon at one time or another (though I could be wrong), and there are some good non-fiction works out there, too. These days, though, buffalo hunting is not something discussed (PC stuff and all that), so the fiction might be thin on the ground.

I was looking for fiction, more for entertainment for myself. I'm on a black powder cartridge rifle kick right now.

Didnt Matt Braun do a series about mountain men along these lines?

They were titles like "Revenge of the Mountain Man" and whatnot.

Maybe I am thinking of a different author.

In her book, Hanta Yo!, Ruth Beebe Hill wrote of the ancient manner in which the American Indians hunted buffalo before they had the horse....they herded them over small cliffs by the hundreds, thus breaking their legs or killing them. These places are now sacred to the white man and are coveted if one is discovered on a ranch. They are called Buffalo Jumps. Mel Gibson owns a ranch (now for sale) here in Montana called Buffalo Jump Ranch.

At the bottom of these jumps the women and children would skin and de-flesh the animal, saving every bit from the sinew to the hide for use in their daily lives. Artifact hunters today still happen upon a find now and again of a spear or arrow point or bones, buffalo skulls and so on.

I highly recommend her book, twenty years in the writing, very intense and about a thousand + - pages. She delves into the language, customs and natural way of life of the Native people.

Tons of research!

When did buffalo become bison?

not sure but I think they ARE bison, not buffalo...or something. Here in Montana we call them bison...
