I just came across this cool map of the stars as seen from Earth:

Like google maps, you can easily zoom in and out and pan. If you click on the upper left blob that shows the time, you can set your location to anywhere on earth. You can also search for specific stars and constellations.
You can get basic stellar info by moving your cursor over a star, and clicking gets you a detailed info page.
It looks like a pretty cool tool if you want to use the real galaxy in your writing (or just want to know about the stars overhead).
