At the end of a Louis L'Amour book I was reading there was a mention of his compiling biographies for over a thousand gunfighters. Does anyone know if any of this was ever published?

No worries, Hawk. Happens to all of us. Goodness knows I've done more than my share. :)

It's kind of embarrassing to do on the sacred first post. If this could be moved to Westerns, I'd appreciate it.

Checked Wiki and LaAmour 'official' site. Didn't see it under his non fiction works and didn't see a work it might be included in.

I don't think *he* ever actually did one. There is such a book out there, though. The title is eluding me at the moment, but I do believe University of Oklahoma Press came out with it.

If I remember correctly, he used these biographies as research for his novels. He never complied them into a book, though doing so might not be a bad idea. Maybe Beau just hasn't thought of it.

These certainly were not compiled by L'Amour, but here are some decent (albeit sometimes contradictory) references.

Encyclopedia of Western Lawmen & Outlaws, by Jay Robert Nash

Wild and Wooly, and Encyclopedia of the Old West, by McLoughlin

Legends of the Wild West, by Signet Books

This is bugging me, because I *saw* a chronology of gunfights at a Borders a few months back (and it was either University of Oklahoma or Nebraska that published it). Didn't buy it, because I had research needs for a NF project, but now (of course) I wish I would have.

Got it: "Encyclopedia of Western Gunfighters" by Bill O'Neal (OU Press) 386 pages. Has gunfighters and a chronological list of their verified gunfights.

Another really good one is "Deadly Dozen" by Robert D'Arment.
