Just when I thought poetry was impossible...(with many apologies to you poets out there!)

these are some poems from the 8 and 9 year olds in my class:

It’s Not Really Easy
By Student 1

Sometimes
With friends
I mess around

Playing
Goofing off
Getting into trouble

Other times
By myself
I do my work

Listening
Following directions
Getting things done

It’s not really easy
To make good decisions
Especially when
Messing around
Is more fun

But no matter my decision
I’m a good kid inside

I don’t know what to write
By
Student 2

I DON’T KNOW
WHAT
To write

When you don’t know what to write,
It’s hard to know what to write

I MEAN IT!!!!!!

I really don’t know what to write
And
I’m serious about it!!!

So DON’T try to MAKE ME

New Friends
By Student 3

One Day
Two boys
Walking down the street
Meet

“What’s your name?”

“George. Yours?”

“Quinton”

“Want to learn?”

“About what?”

“The water cycle”

“I’d rather play.”

“Okay”

One Day
Two boys
Walking down the street
Friends

Family
by
Student 4

My Family
is nice
(and sometimes mean)

They help me
with
My “divorced” problems

They help me when
I’m sad
when
My mom and dad
Fight

They talk to me,
saying
“leave them to their business”

Then
I get over it
and
just
be
a
Kid

My Big Sister
By
Student 5

My big sister
Is
WEIRD
And
FAT
She calls herself THIN

She
NEVER
Does her homework
(She has BAD GRADES)

She NEVER
wears deodorant
(SO STINKY!!)

She NEVER
wears her pants
(SO ICKY!!!)

My little sister
Tells her
“STOP!”

But then
My big sister
Just
Does
It
again

Student 3 IS good- what a poet, eh?
He struggles with everything- but poetry-- he gets it. It's nice.

I tried to understand 5's sister. Seems that her room is near the living room and she's quite comfy in underwear-- HA! It's interesting to see what others notice...

Thanks for your comments, PH.

Student 1 and I have a lot in common - well said.

PSG, you're an inspiration to them and to us. What a great project!

Yep, what Rob said.

And I distinctly remember writing a whole essay to my junior high english teacher along the same lines as the #2 poem. :D

These are cool, PSG!

HA! #2 once wrote an essay on how his big talent was being able to make the teacher laugh by mocking her! (hehe!) The poem comes from an idea he wrote in his writer's notebook some time ago-- he shared and I giggled the rest of the WEEK about it. SO he wrote the essay in response to that- made me laugh more- he's got a great sense of humor, that one!
