View Full Version : New attempt at organizing NW writers...

My schedule got a bit muzzy the end of March and I dropped the ball.
Any local writers interested in getting together? Mac? I'd love to see who is in the neighborhood! I'm in Portland and would love to host a get together at a local coffee shop or pub - preferably the latter ;) sometime in June.
Maybe I should post this somewhere else in the forum to get the ball rolling.

I'm in Vancouver. I'd be cool to meet up with some other AW folks.
Take care

Count me in. I'm twenty-minutes outside of Portland in North Plains, Or. -- Well, twenty-minutes dependent upon the temperament of the Bermuda Triangle of highways I like to call Hwy 26. :)

Excellent!
I'll have to dig up the other thread and get a hold of the other local writers that posted before.
Mac had mentioned some interest in coming down from Seattle.
I think a pub would be fun - we could get snacks if we were so inclined ;)
I'm thinking Saturday, June 9?

I hate to bust this bubble, but many AW'ers have tried for years to set up a place to meet and it's always been a bust. There are threads about the great AW meeting that never took place.
Sorry, I just don't see it happening. I know this is bad news, just don't kill the messenger.
Maybe Mac or someone could have a page for local group meets? I think that trying to get people from all over the states will be difficult.
I vote for a page where locals can meet and exchange stories. Who else shares this idea?

If it happens, it happens; if I'm the only one who shows up, I'll just have to drink beer for everyone. :)

Ummm, that's what this is. People who are in or around Portland, or are willing to drive an hour or so to get here.
Did ya read the thread? ;)
Saturday June 9th it is! Location to be determined depending on how many people we can drum up. Maybe a brunch or something simple at a local brew pub. These places also serve NA beverages so those what don't imbibe won't feel left out.
I'll send an IM to Mac to see if she's interested in joining our merry adventure! Woohoo!

Wish I were a bit closer. I'm in the Walla Walla/Dayton/Waitsburg area. Kind of a long trip for one day. Maybe I should host one...we're getting quite a reputation as Wine Country here. But then again, Portland has shopping...hmmmmmm! The timing won't work for me this time, but keep me in mind if you decide to do this regularly! Great idea!

Mac confirmed and said she's up for it.
Now we're just scouting locations ;)
Can't wait to meet you guys!
Saturday June 9th here in Portland.
Figuring at 1:00 - that gives people time to drive down and drive back - we could have a late lunch or just appetizers if people are so inclined.
Sound good? If there's a time conflict, let me know.
I love it when a plan comes together!
I'll PM everyone who's posted an interest in the meet and greet the final info!
Cheers!

ghost hunting SOO rocks. I used to go out around the area with my bro and hunt out local haunts. The Borst House is apparently haunted according to the woman I talked to there. She maintained the house for tours and claims to have seen a woman at the top of the stairs. She said she quit going out there alone after that.
Been out there many times checkin it out..nuthin pffft...been lots of places..no luck..stupid ghosties

As much as I'd love to be there, my son is coming home for a two week leave - it's the last leave he'll get here in the States before he is deployed to Iran - and that's the weekend he wants us all to go to Disneyland as a family. And there you have it.
You is the second person dude; I'd refer to Deek as "he" in the subject case, "him" in the object case, using third singular masculine because, well using the neuter is generally not done in Modern English and the dual is right out with a singular antecedent.

If we decide on Henry's wees are allowed in the dining room but not in the pub section.
I guess it all depends on where we meet. The hubby is going to stay home and watch my little girl - Hooray for me! Mummy gets to go be bad ;)
If this date 6/9 is wonky for some we might be able to move it to get more folks to come. I just chose that date because it worked for me!
If enough people RSVP, I may make a reservation at the place to guarantee seating.
I'm away Memorial Day weekend so I'd like to get the details tied up ASAP - I'm a bit of a nudge that way.

DandF...I feel like such a moron. I didn't check your profile and see your age - when you asked about kids, I assumed you meant you had one (oops! hee hee, pokes toe in sand and shrugs...)
Sorry about that. I wasn't being dismissive and referring to you as a wee.
Email me and we can work out the details Either meet at Powell's first and we all hang out in the coffee shop (then move on for adult libations) or your parents join us and we all meet in the dining room of a local restaurant. I'd love to meet all the local writers. It would be great to have you there and your parents can call me. IM me or send me that email for info!!!
Any more thoughts on the date? Still sticking with 9th? Henry's or Jakes?. Jakes has yummy apps and tasty drinkies. Henry's is close to Powells.

June 9th? At Henry's and Powell's? I'm not sure where Henry's is, but I can probably make it. I'm down south of Portland in the city of Clackamas; I wouldn't mind coming out and torturing you all with my never-before-seen face. I'll even try to shave before coming out.
What all are we exactly doing, and how much money are we thinking of spending per person, so I can prepare myself?
You know, I don't believe I've met any of you people in person, and I think this would be kind of cool.
Just remind me not to drink any beer -- as if you have to; I can't stand the taste of the stuff. Wine I might be able to handle, but beer? Ugh!

Thanks! Mine is too (again, somehow it disappeared) -- if you see me wandering aimlessly give a shout. :)
Err . . . the thing is, I can't see much beyond what's right in front of me.
But if you see a short chick with long hair and glasses, it's likely me. :D

Oregon? Dang. I'm way too far away for that one. But, if ya ever see me, I'm tall like a model, reddish-brown hair, dark brown eyes, and have been told I look Irish. Can't say wether or not I do, because I haven't been to Ireland....yet....

Wow, good thing I logged in today!
But, Portland? Hm, let's see. I'm in Eugene so it's quite a drive out. Thing of it is, I can't drive myself because I am HOPELESS with directions and I get lost really, really bad. May opt for a cab, though. I'm currently checking to see if I can get a ride.
Also, no alcohol for me, please. And will there be smoking? I don't know if they allow smoking or not in Portland bars but I'm sort of avoiding secondhand smoke. I can't have caffeine, either. (*growls and mumbles "5 more months, 5 more months...") but I'm sure they'll have water. I checked out the site and the menu looks yummy! I'd love to come!

Love to have you! The restaurant is non-smoking but there is smoking outside. Don't have to drink - congrats on the bambino (or bambina)! How exciting. Rootbeer has no caffeine, nor juice, nor herbal tea. I don't do caffeine either. But I do like my beer!!!!
You can PM me and I'll give you my cell #. If you can get a lift into Portland, I could probably pick you up and deliver you to Henry's on 12th ;)

I don't know. I know that other members have arranged meetings in other parts of the country, but I just thought it would be cool to meet my local fellow AW'ers.
I'd like to see it happen again - it would be cool if other members across the country organized these kind of things, too.
People said they'd take pictures and I'll have my camera - I'll post a few in the AW family album.
If you hopped on a plane right now, I'd meet ya at the airport and buy you a beer :D heehee.

I'll have to settle for a virtual beer.
Ahhhh! That was good.
The next one's on me.

Thanks for the congrats.
I made a phone call AFTER logging out of AW and something has come up which I need to save my extra money for. Looks like I can't make it physically but I'll be there in spirit.
Next time, I'll make plans to show up and stay off the darn phone til it passes!

So today's the day!
Before the House of Love people met, many of us were somewhat nervous about what the others would think of us. It turned out to be a really pleasant group and I'm pretty sure every single person there had a terrific time, even the few spouses who didn't know anybody. Several of us who had announced "No pictures" relented, too.
I hope you NWers have just a great a time putting faces and names together. You all share pictures, okay?

I will be the guy in the hat. I guarantee you wont miss me. Im bringing a camera too, so if you dont want your picture taken just let me know. Im also wondering if anyone realized that this is the big parade weekend? The parade should be ending by 1 but I wonder how it will affect the parking situation. Ah well. Welcome to Portland.

I was wondering why it was raining so hard today ;)
I forgot all about Rose Festival when I started planning all of this. I'll be heading over early to get stuff set up...If you want to PM me I'll give you my cell# and if you park far away, I can pick you up...maybe we could do a mini carpool thing?
Anyone else worried about parking? I have a Subura Outback with a toddler car seat in the back....I can take three people if need be.
Cheers!
I'm so excited to meet everyone!

I started another thread after the meet but only had one reply so I guess I will post here too. It was great to finally put some faces to the names. Sorry I had to leave early but the time I spent there was quite enjoyable. Maybe now that youve met me in the flesh you will come into the chat room and meet the rest of the gang there. Id like to see this happen again when we can get more people to show up. Cept maybe next time we can do without the calamari. HEHHEHE.

 Wish I was there.
But still, great that everyone had a good time. I was waiting to see how it went and it looks like a success. Which is good news for me because that means there will be another one!

Oh, yeah. I had the unfortunate need to ask what that was before I ate some. It tasted good, but one sucker in my mouth was more than I really needed to experience.
It was good to finally meet you, Brian. Like others have said, it's nice to finally put a face to the name (I believe that was something Mac said to me, actually, as she sat across the table from me). I don't think I've ever met a friendlier bunch of people in my life.
I'm just glad everyone made it home safely. :)

Howdie ya'all, I didn't even know there was a regional group, till I read MaryN's sig. I see that I missed a meet, though down in Portland is a wee bit far - I am north of Bellingham. Is there a regular forum around? All I see is the meet-and-greet threads.
