I was just wondering...how many of you are published and in what genre? I presently have a completed paranormal romance being read by a couple of agents, and a bunch of rejections from others. I was just curious what everyone else was writing and able to get published.

Yes, but only in Australia and NZ. My genre is science fiction humour (think Red Dwarf, Hitchhikers Guide, that sort of thing).

I'm currently writing book four in the series and my agent is shopping the first three around British publishers at the moment.

The good thing about the SF/Humour genre is that it's a specialised niche with very little competition. The bad thing about SF/Humour is that it's a specialised niche.

No.

Unless it's on a poster at the post office. I haven't checked lately.

Maybe I can aspire to that, at least. Nothing else seems possible.

My memoir, Look Me in the Eye, is coming out this fall. My next book will be a non fiction work on Asperger's syndrome. My first book is about growing up with Asperger's, where the second will talk more about the condition itself.

No, and yes. I am not so inspired to do so at this moment in time. Or again? My work isn't about credits, as such, so I have the luxury of writing without the pressure of publication.

Although, I submit someday, I will submit someday.

No I'm not. I am working toward legitimate publication though, in the Fantasy/SF genre.

Yes - non-fiction. It's not difficult to get short articles published in specialist titles, if you don't mind the very modest payments.

Still working on getting my novel into a submittable state, though - much harder than writing a 2,000 word article!

Thanks so much everyone. I was just wondering, especially if I'm writing in a genre that is being stuffed down agents throats so much they are sick of it. I appreciate your inputs, and congratulations on being published, and good luck to those out there like me......still keeping every part on my body crossed that it works out. I'm so crossed I'm starting to get cramps!

2 novels coming out next year, in the contemporary romance genre (e-pub that will both go to print as well). 6 years of writing and submitting without a bite, and then 2 contracts signed within 2 months of each other. Seriously, it can happen to anyone.

Yes.

Historical fiction set in Antiquity; soon, I'll be branching out into historical fantasy and heroic fantasy.

For novels? Paranormal romance (really borderline urban fantasy). Three books, one of which is already out, the second coming in November, and the third in August 2008. And I also will have a novella published next year in an anthology.

(Separately, I have a women's fiction/contemporary on submission and a YA urban fantasy on submission. Argh. Waiting is sooooo much fun...)

Agents only get sick of novels that don't do well at the box office. If it's something they can sell, they'll take all they can get.

What genre, Joyce?

Saundra Mitchell
05-24-2007, 09:18 PM
I've published tons, a lot of journalism work, short stories in lit magazines, I'm produced in short film and my first YA novel comes out in Feb 2009 from Delacorte Press.

Saundra- the manuscript I presently have out with two agents looking at is a paranormal romance, which I am assuming falls into a fantasy catagory. I had a hard time putting it into a genre, especially since it takes place a couple of years in the future, here on good ole planet earth, with no "out of this world" characters except good old Mother Earth. I never realized there were so many sub-genres. I hope I am categorizing mine correctly since it's got a bit of romance, paranormal crap, thriller and a couple of fantasy characters.

None of my novels published as yet (working on it), but I do have something like 4 or 5 of those... ;)

Plenty of short stories published. I don't even know what you would call them. One is literary-historical but semi-supernatural with Christian overtones, one is I guess Christian sci fi, one is umm contemporary fiction? Another one is sort of... ummmmmm... nostalgic? Can't remember the others. Anyway maybe you would just call them all literary. Is that what we call things that don't fit into neat little genre categories? :)

Never had any fiction published, but as I work as a Lifestyles Editor, I've had tons of feature stories printed in the newspaper and several others in this area. I wish I could say I've been published in magazines, but so far, no luck.

In August in the UK, and September in North America, yes! And very excited about it too! An adventure middle grade novel (I call it magical realism because that is what it is, but it sounds a bit la di da when I say it, so I go with adventure - with pirates!)

Novel: mainstream, although Borders believes it's romance. LOL. My WIP is also mainstream.

Short stories: literary, horror, humor, etc.

Also essays, and a weekly movie review column.

Ugh -genre? That's the rub. Mine tend to straddle lines, which can create issues in everything from cover art, to blurbs, to where to get reviews, to how the publisher sells the title and so on.

have done Romance and Christian Romance (still do some of this)
