I'm a noob at this game. I just waded through Amazon to see what was available re: books on writing query letters and a synopsis. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Share Your Work ---> Query Letter Critique

There is a sticky thread there with query writing resources. Also read a bunch of threads. See how other letters have been dissected. Look at the ways in which they are suggested to improve. I've learned more from that forum than from any published book on the subject.

I recommend you save your money. There's tons of info online for free. Also, the benefit of searching for info online is you get much more variety of query styles and ideas than you might from a single book. This aspect may help you decide which approach works best for your story. I mean, unless the book offers different examples, such as queries for thrillers, romance, mysteries, horror, etc., the style presented may not be a best fit.
