Our Southern New Englanders so far:

::EDIT:: - August 29, 2007

We are expanding this to include ALL of New England now. (Big thanks to Foinah for changing the name of this thread from "Southern New England" to "New England.")

.1. Plot Device ..... Western Mass
.2. Vandal .......... Southeastern Mass
.3. C.bronco ........ New Milford, CT
.4. rhymegirl ....... East Providence, RI
.5. Pisarz .......... Sturbridge, MA
.6. pconsidine ...... Hartford, CT
.7. rubyen .......... Nashua, New Hampshire
.8. Danger Jane ..... Massachusetts South Shore
.9. popmuze ......... Fairfield, CT
10. sunna7kore ...... Maine
11. The Scip ........ Southern Massachusetts
12. imagoodgurl4 .... Greater Boston Area

(Am I about to trick myself into organizing this thing? ;) )

I suggest the following possibile meeting sites:

Springfield, MA
Boston, MA
Sturbridge, MA
Concord, NH

Here's what constitutes Southern New England:

Massachusetts
Connecticut
Rhode Island
Maine
New Hampshire
Vermont

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/statesbw/newenglandbw.GIFhttp://www.nelabc.org/site_images/New_England_Map_detail_large.gif

(And some would argue that the eastern border of New York State, as well as the whole of Long Island, should be included as well.)

It's not a terribly huge geographic area (these states are actually teeny-tiny). It's possible to drive from the New York State line to Boston in less than three hours. And from Long Island Sound to the Canadian border in less than six. New England is just about half the size of the island of Ireland.

Now ... I am NOT up to the task of organizing anything myself in the near future. But I thought maybe getting a thread out here would be a good start for those who might one day have the unction to do so.

And oh yeah--I'm in Western Mass, the Connecticut River Valley, right along Interstate 91.

Hi Danger Jane -- Where will you be going to college?

Hi rubyen -- I have been thinking of expanding this to include ALL of New England (which would then bring in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine). Either way, you're welcome to include yourself here.

Okay, I am now expanding this to include ALL of New England. So that includes Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

I vote for the following possible choices:

Springfield, MA
Boston, MA
Sturbridge, MA
Concord, NH

RATIONALE: If we keep it in Massachusetts, that makes it the most central location. Concord, NH is probably the MOST dead center of all the selections, but I kinda suspect Maine is a little more sparsely populated than the three southern states are-- and I likewise suspect that the northern reaches of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine have the least AW folks. Meanwhile, if we stick with either Springfield or Boston, we leave open ALL inter-city transportation options, including buses and trains, and the inner-city transportation is also very generous in both locations.

pconsidine

I can go either way, since it's a difference of maybe 45 minutes between them.

Yes, I drive fast.

Wicked fast, even.

It's hard to deliver newspapers with much accuracy when you're racing by people's houses too fast. I've been finding them in the bushes lately.

I think you'd definitely be right about that. We broke a million in ME a few years ago, but not by much, and I think Portland probably accounts for a quarter of that. :)

Yay!! I can get to Boston by train or bus; I'm not sure how to get to Springfield, but I could manage it from Boston. Does the T go in that direction? I've only ever lived on the North Shore, so glorious 128 is all I know.

To get to Springfield from Boston you'd have to do either an Amtrak train or a bus (like Peter Pan or Greyhound or Trailways).

If I organize it, it's going to be Springfield for sure.

Springfield is a great town, even if it's not the Simpson's Springfield. It's got the basketball Hall of Fame, plus Amherst and all those other colleges. I think something like seven colleges within five miles.

Having grown up in Maine I would have to say that you really are that boring. Really.

Also. . . Maine is bigger than the rest of the other New England states combined. We have a county bigger than Rhode Island, really. It has about eight people living in it too.

I will be back up there sometime in the middle of '08. . . I vote for a meeting at a pub in Boston.

We're a bunch of rugged individualists, ok? We don't need no stinkin' nightlife.

I think there's at least 11 people living in Aroostook county these days. Hmph.

I'm on Long Island, and I demand to be included! :D

I was on vacation in Portland, ME last winter - yes, yes, we went on vacation in Maine during the winter, and no, we don't ski even a little - and while in the ladies' room of a restaurant, I found myself at eye level with a bit of graffiti I thought was indicative of the nature of Mainers. Someone had written "I (heart) Portland." and someone else replied beneath it, "Your Mom (hearts) Portland." Like, is that the absolute worst thing y'all could come with, snappy-comeback-wise? LOL, as a born-and-bred Queens girl, I found that hysterical, in a sweet, aww-shucks kind of way. I took a picture of it on my camera phone because I knew no New Yorker would ever believe it.

**raises hand** I'm from Maine, too! I'm way-way-way far away from all that's interesting or important, though, so I doubt I'll be able to travel anywhere close to the places outlined in this thread so far. :( I'm about one hour and a half north of Portland. There's tress, cows, some more trees and, oh yeah . . . cows. Stupid wilderness. Now, there's snow. Lot's and lots of snow. **sighs**

If you're in West Springfield, just down the block from the Big E, how about the Starbucks just over the bridge in Springfield on Columbus Avenue?

As for the time, 3:30 weekdays is bad for me. Weekends would work better for me at that time of day.

Later in the evenings? Not always. My job doesn't usually end until 7 PM each night and I'm always so beat by then that going out is almost impossible. I'd fall asleep in my coffee right in front of you. And then I'd be wasted the next day at work.

Another weekend??

::ETA::

Another possibility is lunch. I am usually available from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Mon-Fri. Do you have lunch availability? I can drive to Agawam to meet you with no problem (assuming you work in Agawam).

Thing is, I live in Springfield where I am a full-time, live-in nanny. I drive the children to school every day down in Southwick, so I take I-91 South to 57 West, passing right through Agawam on my way to the school in Southwick every day. Then, when I finish dropping off the children by 9:00 AM, I drive right back to Springfield again via 57 East, and then return to Southwick by 3:00 PM to get the children again. So I am constantly driving through Agawam.

My availability between 10:00 and 2:00 is usualy pretty flexible. So if you'd like we can meet for lunch in Agawam. There are loads of very cool little lunch places all over Agawam just perfect for that.

But if you do NOT work in Agawam, maybe I can drive to whatever town/city you work at (Springfield?? Hartford?? Wilbraham?? Northampton??) and we can meet for lunch then. The only negative I see is if you have a skimpy lunch of just 30 minutes and zero flexibility. Or else if your job won't allow you to do lunch (like if you are a school teacher and therefore cannot have someone come to your school for lunch).

Would this work???

I'm actually unemployed at the moment (or a stay-at-home housewife as I like to call it :) ) so I'm free all day, except for tomorrow because we have a new washer and dryer being delivered at some point in the afternoon.

We could do lunch on Friday. My only restriction is that we've only got one car, which my husband uses to get to work, so it would have to be a place within walking distance for me. That would leave us with: The Parthenon, Christo's, Subway, McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts that I can think of off the top of my head.

Cool, yay for New Englanders. :)

I'll be honest. The main reason I'm interested in trying to have some kind of meetup in Southeastern Mass is for accessibility. I could drive out to Boston or go west or go to the Cape or go all over RI, but I know myself. It just won't happen. I know both Boston and Providence have different writer groups, but for me to travel to those regularly is a pain.

So if there are people willing to travel anywhere in the southeastern MA area, I would have no problem organizing something over the summer, or perhaps something regular if there were enough people. If no one can make it or it's too far, then that's just how it goes. I just wanted to meet some other writers in the area :)

So far I was thinking either Swansea, Dartmouth, or Seekonk as some suggestions. Maybe Taunton. Anyone have any others?

I'm someone who doesn't like to drive, has no sense of direction, and doesn't drive on the highway.

That's why Swansea or Seekonk would be perfect for me. They're right on the line from where I live and would be very accessible.

Anybody here from Vermont? I am in Honduras right now, but will be back in VT July 7 would love a meet up.

Okay, I've been giving it some thought, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in some kind of meet-up in either late July or early August for Southern Mass (and parts of Rhode Island)? The problem is I think we're spread out all over so this might not work.

I was aiming for the first meet-up to be either in Swansea or Seekonk for people closer to Rhode Island. Maybe at a later time, in the fall, we can do one towards New Bedford, Fairhaven, or North Dartmouth for people closer to the Cape.

If there's enough interest, I'll start looking up some cafes or little eateries where we can set up shop.

So far it seems like it's just two of us.

Any other takers? I'm serious. I'll do the planning and set it up. Any others in the area?

Oh man... wish I could say definitely yes, but the hubby and I are knee-deep in buying our first house. That'll be right about the time we start scheduling the contractors to come out to start doing repairs and upgrades.

The best I can say is maybe. :(

If people are interested enough, we can do it again, so if you can't make it, we'll try for another time :)

But hope you can come! I'll throw out some dates soon and we'll see what works out for everyone :)

Oh good. And yes, I was just waiting to see if anyone else wanted to join us. I haven't heard anything.

I'm not opposed to a Sunday afternoon. Is Sunday okay with anyone else?

I'm leaning toward Seekonk. I'll post in a couple of days about some times and places and we can decide what works best for everyone. Sounds good?

Sunday should be fine.

I could PM some people under Meet and Greet who live in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. And Connecticut. To see if anyone else is interested.

So I was thinking maybe either 8/15 or 8/29. (8/22 is out for me.) And we could either meet at a restaurant/sandwich shop or a cafe/coffee shop. It depends on how long we decide to meet up and what you all are comfortable with.

How does 1pm sound? Location in Seekonk TBA?

Well, if none of you are adverse to just the 3 of us, then we can still make it a go.

I was thinking either this Sunday at 1pm at Starbucks or Panera or 8/29 at the same time, same places.

I'd say we can iron out the specifics via PM in case info starts to get too personal. Anyone is still invited though.

Well that certainly changes things.

How's about our host -- the one throwing this meeting together -- post an exact address of the exact Panera. And an excact address includes a zip code and the store's phone number. That way folks like me who are just clueless and beyond remediation can plug it into a GPS map finder.

Hey, I know this is super last minute but I've been offline for a few days. My mom was admitted to the hospital and I've been running around trying to take care of things and she was just released and now I'm taking care of her. Is there anyway we can postpone this 2 weeks? Like I said I know it's super last minute but I wasn't counting on a family medical emergency.

I'm sorry about your situation. I went through that with my mom a half dozen times from 2007 to 2009 right before she died.

I am leaving the house in just 10 more minute to drive 2 hours to Seekonk.

I already made an agreement with rhymegirl that I would be there at Panera in Seekonk today at 1:00 PM.

I will right now send my cell phone number to you and to rhymegirl via Rep Point. Either of you can call me on the road if you need me.

A second meeting would possibly work for me in addition to today's meeting. So I'll see if I can make it in 2 weeks as well. I don;t see a conflict at this time for me in 2 weeks.

Best wishes, KL. Take care of your mom.

Rhymegirl had to cut it short, but we had lunch and a lively chat.

Happy to try again in 2 more weeks, but can we move it a little further north this time? Maybe Pawtucket or North Providence?
