After reading a bunch of talk of query letters, epic fantasy, and "write what you want" I thought I'd start this thread to post spec sales in.

Criteria - So long as it's a spec sale, i.e. the sale of material that was written as a screenplay with no guarantee of payment. If it's based on a published work, it doesn't really count.

It's got to be recent. Yes, I know Lethal Weapon was a spec. It was also sold a million years ago in a market that doesn 't really exist.

And if you know, add the names of the writers, their agent, the buyer, and if it's available, the amount of money it sold for and the logline.

When you look at the kinds of scripts that sell, you'll be able to get a more professional idea of the market.

I'm not sure, but wasn't "Little Miss Sunshine" sold on spec?

Nicely done, apparently it was.

As you know, sites like Done Deal Pro (http://www.donedealpro.com/default.aspx) compile script sales info and offer this as a service (you can search the database for spec sales). DDP's annual subscription is a reasonable $23.95 per year, but unfortunately since it's a private service, posting search results here or anywhere else is likely to be frowned upon. All I'm saying is, if you want this kind of up-to-date info you may have to pay for it somehow/somewhere.

Right, and I'm not advocating stealing someone's database - but if you see that Joe Schmoe from North Hollywood sold his "snakes on a plane" for mid-six figures through William Morris, why wouldn't you post it here?

There are a lot listed in screenwriting magazines, also.

Check out http://www.trackingb.com/ -- posts more than a fortnight old are free to view (or you can sign up for $69). They seem to keep on top of spec activity.

Look, assume for a moment that I know databases exist.

I just thought it might be fun to discuss spec sales, much in the same way I enjoy discussing the performance of the Lakers.

If there's a spec sale that's amusing or relevant, I'd love to hear about it, just for laffs. If I'm the only one of such a mind, then let this thread gracefully die.
