I have to write a short fiction peice. Is it a good idea to make it grim?

Why not? As long as you think it's a good story, and you reread and check your spelling and grammar, a short story can be humorous, humorless and end in a twist, be blood-curdling scary, or whatever else. Make sure it has a beginning to hook the reader, and an intriguing middle, and an ending. Of course, there's a lot more to it than that....

So long as it has a properly resolved plot, I don't imagine the tone is crucial.
