my work always tends to come back to the corrupting power of Religion and the manipulation of the need to believe by those in Power. Obvious why, of course - these are my attitudes towards such things. But the danger is that you can end up just window dressing a personal rant.

Can anyone think of good books that have addressed thses ideas but avoided the danger of solipsistic ranting?

Fiction or non-fiction? The DaVinci Code is obviously a prime example of fiction and there are plenty more.

Have you read "The Crime of Father Amaro" by Eca De Queiros?

I'm not clear about what you seek, but I have been impressed with the works of Bishop Spong who boldly speaks out against the many of the fallacies of orgaanized religion and religious thought.

Oh, and I liked the DaVinci code very much, but remember ... while it may have some roots in truth, it is a clever, creative work of fiction.
