Usually I don't read literary, but I got her Booker Award winner, The Gathering and I'm in awe. I haven't seen such tight, dense prose in ages. The plot is grim but I'm loving the writing. She finesses flashback so adroitly you hardly notice you're there. She moves effortlessly between present and past tenses. Even if The Gathering seems too dark, you owe yourself a read just as a study in writing mastery.

I agree - I love her writing, both her subject matter and her mastery of the art. In my opinion she's one of the finest writers working in the world today. I'm glad you discovered her.

Alice Hoffman in Fortune's Daughter (1985) finesses the flashback. From what's said here, maybe Enright took a lesson from it?
