If you guys do it December 10 - 12, I could maybe make a guest appearance. I'll be back home for an all purpose holiday visit, but I've done seen them fools thousands of times. Time for some new fools to put in mental photo album.

If there is cider I am there. :) I'm NOVA myself...I can swing DC but MD might be tough without a lot of notice.

Some of MD is closer than parts of DC, since it can't be done as-the-crow-flies and traffic and all...

Where I live now, everything is 15 minutes away or less. And it doesn't get too hot.

Somehow, I still miss NOVA.

The largest regional writing organization in the U.S. is in the Washington, DC area: Washington Independent Writers (http://www.washwriter.org). They do have critique groups for members.

Serenity and I are in NoVA. :D

I work retail in December, which makes weekend time-off hard, but I'd love to get together with you folks.

Excellent! Is anyone able to make the Dec meeting with Perks (aside from me) or should we shoot for January? PM me your area and we'll mapquest someplace that is centrally located.

Linda, thank you for that link, I'll definitely check it out. :)

I can do a December meeting with any of the dates Perks mentioned. Or January. I'm flexible!

Jack Nog

I'm in NOVA and had no idea there was such an interest (I'm a little guarded when it comes to my writing) in this area. I'm pleasantly surprised by the presence here at AW. I might even allow myself to be talked into showing up for something like this. I'm going to have to keep tabs on this. My schedule is flaky at best with work, (I work in Herndon and sometimes in the D.C.) but I'd like to hear the plan and see my options.

Serenity
11-27-2007, 08:06 AM
Herndon rocks! I used to work at the SACC program at Floris Elementary. I'm working in Reston now. But my dibs are in with Chaos-- duh, right? :P I'm game for anything!

wyntermoon

Alrighty-

So far we have a vote for dinner at a fabulous Thai restaurant in DC recommended highly by Namatu (yum!). Other suggestions? Closer in to NOVA?

What dates work better for the December meeting. Perks will be in town Dec 10-12, is there a day that works better for everyone?

Namatu
11-28-2007, 05:39 AM
Any day for me.

wyntermoon
12-02-2007, 07:09 PM
Here's the scoop:

Dinner and no crits for December!

Date: December 10th Date changed, new one TBA
Time: 7p
Place: Haad Thai (http://www.haadthairestaurant.com/index.php) in DC

Questions? I'm just a PM away!

Perks
12-02-2007, 07:11 PM
Come to dinner people!!! I've never met any AWers.

Serenity
12-02-2007, 07:22 PM
I work until 6:15 in Reston, (Literally just up the street from the Barnes & Noble by the Reston Town Center, if anyone wants to meet there one day) by the time I get there y'all would be done with dinner. :cry:That and in the five years I've been here, I've never driven in D.C.

Yes-- it scares me, I'm a wimp. :wag:

wyntermoon
12-02-2007, 07:51 PM
ROFL! I'm the same way, I've been here for eight and only driven in the district a handful of times (under duress).

Hmmm, this could be a pickle. Anyone else having time/DC issues?

Perks
12-02-2007, 08:13 PM
If you switch to Northern Virginia or MD, that's fine by me. I'm easy.

And I can drive in DC. I'm a stone-cold badass.

:)

thethinker42
12-02-2007, 08:49 PM
Ok, I live in SE Virginia, but it's only about 3 hours to D.C. I'd drive up there for some events, get-togethers, etc. :)

wyntermoon
12-02-2007, 11:43 PM
Great! The first one is the tenth and we will definitely schedule more for the upcoming year. :)

CatSlave
12-02-2007, 11:56 PM
May I suggest you select a meeting place by a Metro stop - it's the easiest way to travel in DC, IMO. Find parking outside the city then Metro in. Piece of cake.

(Hint: Union Station itself is easy to get to and has plenty of good food places.)

Will try to catch up with all y'all at a later date; I'm unable to travel at the moment.

wyntermoon
12-03-2007, 12:41 AM
Excellent suggestion! :D

ChaosTitan
12-03-2007, 06:19 AM
I won't be able to make dinner on the 10th, but I second CatSlave's suggestion of meeting near a Metro stop.

Maybe I'll see some of you guys in the new year. :)

wyntermoon
12-03-2007, 07:26 AM
We have a change in plans with Perks so the date is now moveable. Does a weekend this month work better for everyone? I'm also considering moving in closer to NoVa - thoughts?

Perks
12-03-2007, 08:21 AM
I'm sorry, guys. Death in the family. Maybe we can try again when I'm up there next?

Absolutely!

I'm sorry, kid!

I think I'll have to abstain until January. I work in retail and there are only 3 more Saturdays until Christmas. Needless to say, time off will be a problem. But things slow down in January.

Although, wyntermoon! You live so close I could probably hurl a snowball at you. You, me, and Serenity need to get together for coffee some day soon. :)

Perks: mega-hugs.

Jaycinth
12-03-2007, 11:35 PM
Somewhere near a metro stop! ( So I can have a couple of brews and not have to worry about driving)
Union Station sounds GREAT! It would even allow people from farther out to train in from Hagerstown...NYC, even....

If ya'lls want to do something in late spring...we can hang out in my yard.

Which is...close to both the metro and Marc train..

AS far as this month... This weekend is booked. Next weekend I have to stay at home so my daughter can have a cookie party... ( I may have a date next Sunday...but I'd sooo ditch him for you guys...maybe) Weekend after Christmas weekend... New years...

Ya'lls can come to my house on New Years Eve!
We can sing to my kids until they pay us to stop.

They'll have Christmas money and I know where my son hides his beer......

...and cemetary...

wyntermoon

We could/will rotate states so everyone will have a chance to get together. :)

Namatu

Cookie party? I'd be happy to come to a cookie party, Jaycinth! :e2cookie:

I don't drive in DC either, unless I'm lost (which is why I'd be in my car in DC). Since I do have a car, however, if we pick a weekend date, I can drive out of NOVA to places I've never heard of, like Clarke Co. ;)

wyntermoon
12-05-2007, 08:15 PM
Phew, I just realized why the 10th was niggling at me, my daughter's first choral concert is that night. I couldn't have made the 10th anyway!

Hmmm, maybe this month would be better shelved until the holidays are over. Thoughts?

Namatu
12-05-2007, 10:45 PM
December is a crammed month. I'm fine with waiting.

wyntermoon
12-06-2007, 12:22 AM
ROFL! Pffftt, you'll do anything for potato curry. ;)

Namatu
12-06-2007, 03:22 AM
That is very true.

And hey! You're making me wait for potato curry! That can not stand.

David Erlewine
12-06-2007, 04:07 AM
I work near Union Station and can walk there in 10 minutes. I usually work early but I can adjust my schedule one night next year when we all meet up. I say Union Station is a GREAT place to meet. Good restaurants, easy to find people since we can pick a store inside to meet at, etc. Looking fwd to it!

I live in DC, though if you've got a good arm you could toss a rock into Maryland from my house.

I'd be interested in a get-together/crit group. I do have to admit, though, that Virginia scares me a little. I don't think I've ever driven there without getting horribly lost. I vote Metro-accessible.

ChaosTitan
12-06-2007, 08:54 PM
You people have still not answered my question. I am not coming until I know.

What kind of beer are you serving?

Answer: depends on where we meet, but I'm always up for Honey Brown. :D

Absolutely! I'm in Clarke Co. now but still close enough for java-fueled chats! Are you still working at B?

Serenity used to work there (seasonal help last year). I'm still stuck with Pier 1. *grumble*Christmasshoppers*grumble*

I second the idea of postponing until after the holidays. I just accepted a temporary promotion that will keep me busy until the first few weeks of January. More money, but definitely more hours. *sigh*

Namatu
12-06-2007, 11:55 PM
Oh, fine. But I'm not waiting on the potato curry! Some things are just too much to ask.

I have a lovely rug from Pier 1.

**clap clap**

Attention please! Atten...oh.

Okay, people. I apologize for the crazy amount of time that has passed since we first talked about getting together. I blame my children entirely.

Our own SherryTex has offered to host the first get-together at her place! She is in the MD section of our territory and, I'm assured, quite easy to get to so no backing out!

This first shindig will just be to get to know each other a wee bit but don't let that stop you from bringing something to share if you'd like. How about a potluck (pack extras, Sherry has a larger family than I do ;))? Sorry for the short notice but she has suggested an evening this weekend, the 19th, 20th or 21st. I won't be able to make the 19th but I'm sure you can carry on without me just swell.

Please respond here or PM me on your choice of day: January 19th, 20th or 21st ASAP, and if you are able to contribute to the potluck. :D

I live in the infamous Frederick, MD.

I'll try to catch up with all y'all at a later date.

But I'm a terrific cook and LOVE to show off at potluck get-togethers.

I'm afraid the stomach flu has hit the Tex household so instead of dipping us all in disinfectant, I'm erecting a tent over their house and changing the venue. Get better soon, Sherry!

So we're back to square one. We have some decisions to make, y'all:
- I've heard from some of you that the 20th will work, is this a plan or shoot for the next weekend to give the others more time?
- NoVa? Back to DC?
- Wait until it's warmer?

Serenity
01-21-2008, 05:00 AM
Ack! It's been forever since I've checked here, sorry! If y'all got together this weekend, I hope you had fun. If not, I'll try and make the next get together! I know Kel (Chaos Titan) is still pretty busy with work and probably will be until at *least* the end of January.

If anyone is also a sci-fi fan, and would like to get together, we'll be at Far Point on February 16th in Hunt Valley, MD. If you're a James Callas fan you should definitely go! I'll be certain to check in with this thread more often now, I promise!

It's amazing what a little powder will do to residents of this area.

I grew up in Wisconsin (home of the Packers...snif...I'm ready to cry after yesterday. Poor Bret!) anyways, I take it we didn't get together this weekend cause of various reasons, health, snow, etc. That's cool because I totally forgot! MY BAD!!!

Anyone up to the 26th?

Perhaps near Arundel Mills so it's closer to DC? I can go as far as Bowie, possibly DC, will have to check on that one. (I'm Towson area so...)

Oh, and it's close to my birthday so I can justify a night out! :) (the 30th - I'm turning 42? I think? How many Superbowls is it now? YUCK!)

I will be at Farpoint, and may be on a panel (depending on whether the Doctor Who panel goes through or not). Several of us have yet to hear from programming whether we're guests or not, but in a worst case scenerio, I'll be hanging around the bar in the evening and visiting with people I know.

February 2008 Potluck

SherryTex has once again offered her home for a potluck (brave woman)! She's looking at the end of February so let's pick and STICK a date! How does Feb. 23rd strike y'all?

Date: Feb. 23rd
Time: TBD by Sherry
Place: Sherry or I will PM the address to those coming. She is in lower MD
Theme: Potluck so bring your best goodies!

I think I can make it Feb. 23. Definitely can not do Jan. 26.

This FarPoint thing... is there Farscape there? No, don't tell me. I don't need the temptation.

ChaosTitan
01-25-2008, 07:27 AM
It started out as a Trek con, but it definitely embraces all SF and Fantasy shows. They've had a few Farscape actor guests in the past. Last winter, Summer Glau (Firefly) was a featured guest.

It's a fun con, and if you're not too far from Hunt Valley, worth a day trip.

While I live in NoVA, actually Fredericksburg. I actually work in NYC.

I might be able to make a get together on weekends I am home if my wife and kids don't kill me for trying to get out of the house on the weekends I am home.

Can someone PM me with any details?

Thanks,

Hi gang! Still new here and VERY interested in getting together. I'm in Fredericksburg (a bit of a hike) but I'm willing to schlep up the road for writer company. End of Sept. works for me, especially with the beerwine, winebeer.

Yes to the grilled veggies! Fruit salad marinated in spirits. I made this once. Where'd that recipe go?

I'm in Arlington.

Okay people, back to the planning! I'm in the middle of Girl Scout camp until the end of the week but let's start those wheels a'turnin'!

Central location: NoVa or southern MD?
Season: summer or fall?
Weekend or Friday night?

SherryTex, are you still up for a shindig or is that too close to delivery? :D

NoVa works better for me. Summer or fall's good. Weekend preferred.

I think I qualify as a newbie b/c I've been gone from AW for so long, just wandered back in today. I didn't know NoVa had an AW group but I like the idea. I live in Alexandria and would be glad to help out. Late summer is probably best for me because of travel and autumn is difficult b/c of youth sports leagues, e.g. football and fall baseball. I've two sons.

Weekend preferred. No preference on the rest.

I'm so sorry we couldn't get together, Namatu. July just royally sucked for both Kelly and myself. August is insane with moving. BUT, if any of you vacation in Ocean City, drop us a PM, we'll meet at Seacrets for drinks!!

Yes, we will have a guest room (and eventually an awesome convertible sofa), so guests are more than welcome. Actually, they'll be in demand, as there's almost too much house for two people and one cat. :D

Hey all. I shot off a PM to Wynntermoon, but I'll shoot one off here too. Kel (Chaostitan) and I have sucessfully completed the move to Maryland's Eastern Shore. WHEW. So, anyone in Ocean City, give us a holler. We'll meet up. :D

Do these ocassional writerly gathers still happen?

I'm stuck way down south (Lexington Park), so I didn't know if I had others lost down my way.

Have car, but its 15 years old and crumbling slowly. I hate driving in DC but will take Metro (even after all their accidents.) I frequently attend the National Book Fair the end of September, as well.

I just popped in here to ask the same thing. (Is this thing on? /taptaptap)

I'm in Northern Virginia, and always looking to meet other writers.
