But with all the praying going on amongst us, I kinda think I am safe. Just don't want anyone's feelings hurt or anything like that....freedom of religion and all, y'know.
Anyhow, I have heard that April 1st is the atheists' holiday because "the fool has said in his heart there is no God." (Psalm 14:1).

I never heard of it. It sounds like something a Christian might have come up with because atheists aren't the kind of people who would base something like this on scripture.

Yeah I've heard it. Sometimes I think I've heard every goddamn weak argument and lame joke from them. Hilariously mean-spirited of them isn't it? Can you feel the christian love and humility?

Nope, never heard of it.

People who are shaky in their own god-beliefs can't tolerate the notion that others don't believe what they believe. Their shaky beliefs require constant validation, and when they don't get it, they resort to baseless insults. I run a religious debate board and I've heard it all: atheists are narrow minded; atheists think they're gods/make themselves into gods; atheists care only about themselves; atheists kill puppies and eat babies; atheists worship Satan. Seems "god" isn't interesting enough for some, so they have to make up stuff about atheists too.

Fortunately, the majority of believers I've run across are much more reasonable and tolerant than that. Only the real ignorami believe (and repeat) foolishness like the statement you've quoted above.

It sounds like something a Christian might have come up with because atheists aren't the kind of people who would base something like this on scripture.Exactly.

I thought April Fools day had to do with shifting New Year's day to Jan 1 from April 1?

I like the idea of an Atheist Holiday. A day when people could be human or something.

Nice. Except, doesn't "holiday" derive from "holy day"?

In my atheistic calendar I created, the equivalant of 'holiday' is 'Official Day Off,' or 'Offdoff.' :D

It was pretty simple, actually. Anyone can create a calendar. All the difficult work has been done already by the astronomers and monks.

Thought I'd google april first and came across this;

http://people.howstuffworks.com/question604.htm

and this;

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/a/atheistholiday.htm

and finally this;

I could go for the suggestion presented in the last link.

My atheist holiday is December 23, Eddie Vedder day. I thought Mac should have added his picture to the holiday season rotation. She did such a nice job of representing the other December holidays.

This year, I'll lobby for it.

The only holidays I know about are Lammas (neo-Pagan) on the 1st, and the Minnesota State Fair.

Maybe we should have something in August. I suggest a picnic holiday.

I'm up for that. My birthday is the 15th.

Whenever someone quotes that verse at me, I respond with Matthew 5:22: "But whoever shall say 'thou fool' shall be in danger of hell fire." Catches them off guard, because Christians can't stand the idea that I've read their Bible more than most of them have.

Perhaps we need another atheist holiday. How about Dec. 9th, Margaret Hamilton's birthday. (She was the wicked witch of the west).

As an atheist (or non-believer) I would not consider any day an 'atheist' holiday if the basis for it was Pagan or any other belief-system.

btw, Margaret Hamilton might have played the role, but in real life she taught Sunday School amongst other things.

Why is it that some people think atheists to be of Pagan or Wiccan denomination?

April 13th - Thomas Jefferson's birthday.

Yeah, why not. He separated the church from the state.
