Sophocles?

Does anyone use it? It looks cheap...which seems good, but what's the
buzz?

I've used it and think it's a great screenwriting program. The outline/scene heading view to the left of your script is damn useful. All these pro level packages have their unique options or quirks that make them stand out from the rest. Download and try all the demo versions and see which suits you best. I personally love Sophocles. Though I admit it's the only program I've ever used...wait, I'm wrong. I tested out some horrid other thing I can't remember the name of. I was leery at first, because it is pretty inexpensive. But I have no complaints at all. It's pretty easy to use and pretty feature-packed for the price.

I had Sophocles at some point (free trial) and hated it, but I don't remember why.

I'm just so helpful like that.

The current version of Sophocles is good and comparable to MM and FD in my opinion. The new version that is being Beta tested now is going to blow both of them out of the water - it's that good.

I heard that Sophocles is quite dead and a lot of unhappy users are hanging in mid air.

Sophocles was a Windows-based screenwriting software application used for writing feature film and television screenplays. The program first became available on the Internet in 1999. It's distinguishing features included a two window screen setup, showing the script and screenplay outline simultaneously.[1]

Sophocles supported industry-standard screenplay formats including scene numbers, A/B revision pages, revision marks, MOREs and CONT'Ds, and so on. All formats were applied automatically, with no intervention required on the part of the user.

After the buyout of the company in Spring 2008, first party technical support disappeared, creating concern among its users. [2]

Oh sure, the one program that worked on my ol' system and did what it was supposed to without mysterious deletions and crashing would end up flaming out.

I think I should see what other programs I really like might have the same 'issues'.

It is now defunct.

Probably none.

My advice is to convert your files, now, to plain text and/or RTF while you still have a version of Sophocles that works. Eventually your computer will crash or you will need to get a new computer.

I have offered to help anyone who has Sophocles files and has suffered a computer crash or theft or whatever. As long as I have a version of Sophocles that works, I will convert your files to plain text or RTF. I have already done this for about three or four people who contacted me through the Done Deal Pro board. Naturally, there is no charge.

FinalDraft 7 and Movie Magic Screenwriter 6 both import text/RTF quite well, with only a little cleanup needed. (The biggest problems are the minislug heads, used for shots; these are often mistaken as Character names.)
