Question about first blog post

I've gotten a blog all set up on Blogger. It's not intended to be a personal diary of any sorts - the subject is current events/social commentary.

I've had the template up for awhile but I keep procrastinating on the first post. I have plenty to talk about but I keep changing my mind as to whether the first post should be sort of a general introduction about me personally (here is who I am, why I decided to do this and here's what I want to achieve) to give it some context, or if I should just dive right in and start blogging about the topic of the day, or sort of a hybrid of both approaches.

Putting anything personal in there (other than the occasional random details that would end up in my posts anyway) seems to be where I'm getting hung up, so I'm wondering how necessary an introductory post is?

I would suggest just going for it. Most people hitting the blog will read the latest post, not the first one. Anything introductory should be in the 'about me' area or side-bar IMHO.

Yep, I agree with veinglory. Maybe get yourself in the mindset that you've written some already and shape how you want your blog to sound with your 'next' entry.

You're unlikely to get a huge amount of hits for your first few posts (or more), so you can always go back and delete the first one if you think it sounds nervous or out of place once you've found your blog voice.

Thanks, guys. I'm surprisingly nervous about the first post but I guess there's nothing to do but just start typing.

Put up three or four posts within quite a short space of time so that readers will get a sense of an active blogger with a range of things to say. The first post doesn't have to be anything particularly special, but the cumulative content over several posts is more important.

To reduce the stress and get yourself moving, you could plan on deleting the whole thing and starting over again in a few weeks. I had a couple of false starts before I settled in on my "real" blog.

Another way to look at it as one "real" blog and another for chitchat. Just have fun and let yourself find your rhythm.

I completely relate. The first post is definitely the hardest. It does get easier though. Just take a deep breath, write about something that matters to you and the rest will be history. Good luck!
