This makes me feel bad. :(

It reminds me painfully of suggestions I made in another place, that people should "adopt" threads and save things to their own hard drives and archive them on CDs and so on. No one does, of course. People are relying more and more on the Internet for their own backups, keeping their e-mail on line, everything. I want my data on redundant CDs some of which might end up buried in my back yard. Paranoia is good. My own website went up in flames once in a server meltdown. I had my own backups. That would not be easy for a larger, many-user site with a huge database.

I wish I had been to ML more often, I might have collected some good bits. I wish you all the best of luck in the salvage efforts. :(

I'm just gonna go through the March and April archives I found and save every thread with comments.

I can do this much, and I think I'd be better off doing it rather than explaining badly how to do it :)
If there are other useful things to do, maybe someone else should do those?

Have you tried the link I provided? Everything is there up till April 27th.

I've tried some of the links you provided, Spooky, but not all -- trying to save what I can in the ways I know and trusting other people to follow up on other aspects of the problem :)

The big question is actually -- can you get at comments in the 200s? I can get everything, and am in the process of doing so, from March and April this year -- except that I cannot get at comments past (depending on the thread) about 160-200.

Uh, did that already. I'm several steps off of that. Only, the caches don't seem to save all comments...

Not actually sure there's much more anybody can do, except with helping them pull it all back into a webpage, but I'm hoping someone can magically find late comments in threads :)

Thank you!

Here's what I just posted as a comment on the ML refugee camp techie thread.

Shweta Narayan on Sunday 4 May 2008 at 03:24

What I have saved: The numbers are (number of comments saved/total number claimed by cache).

The starred lines are ones where I have incomplete comments. I'm going to post the links here and on Absolute Write and ask other people to pretty please click them & see if they get more comments. They're in cache. I just can't get them. Not sure why.

In chaos
Bumping...

If I could collect cache, I would. But I can't on this horribly slow dial-up connection. Fingers crossed that Making Light is salvaged.

Update: can anyone find comments 333-386 of the "darwin fish found" thread?

I found the cache here, but in my browser it bottoms out at 200.
