I need help

Hi,

I have an article written, proofread, edited (by an experienced, published writer) and all set to mail out to a potential magazine. I'm stuck here. I looked through the magazine markets book but I am at a loss for what magazine would be a good fit.

I'm an unpublished writer so that doesn't help me. I would like to make some money for it (I'm not looking for a large amount, just some sort of payment). The article is geared towards middle readers. It is about decomposers in relation to the fallen leaves of autumn. Can someone help me and point me in the right direction? I think I am ready to face possible rejection as I will never become published if I don't start submitting my work to magazines.

TurkeyLurkey, Highlights is on my list but I am concerned as I am unpublished and they receive so many queries monthly so I was hoping to find a magazine I'd have a better shot with.

I would try to look online at the websites of different Magazines--the Carus group has a whole swack of them for different age groups and focus (Cricket, Spider, Babybug, etc). Highlights or Cricket would probably be good choices, but there are many, many others.

You can only get so much info from a 'mag market' book, but the websites often have actual 'sample' content you can browse or up-to-date notes from the staff explaining what they'd like to see more of. Highlights will have a list of wants on their site as well.

I know there's something out there called Ranger Rick - has a raccoon on it, I think, but I'm not sure what kind of stuff is in it.

Have you tried looking on Duotrope for a possible fit? You can plug in your requirements and it will give you a list of possible matches and their websites. You can find it here: http://www.duotrope.com/

You're going to have a lot of competition no matter what magazine you query your article with. Actually, the folks at Highlights are amazingly wonderful and kind people to work with. Query for the magazines you want to be published in. Don't let competition stop you because you'll find it everywhere.

Good writing trumps everything.

Yes, Ranger Rick is another viable option. The National Wildlife Federation sends out this publication. I currently receive My Big Backyard, which might be just a bit too young, but Ranger Rick should be a perfect fit for your article.
