Despite the 'quality' of SM's work, I believe she was influenced rather heavily by Anne Rice's far superior vampire novels...or at least, their sales figures. :D

I've read all of Anne Rice's works, and the quality is typically phenomenal. I'm not sure I see the similarities between the two series. Could you help me out here?

I just think that SM saw a gap in the market, so to speak. The supposed fact that Meyer did hardly any research suggests that she has no innate interest in vampires, yet she was 'inspired' to write a series of vampire novels (?).

Yes, that sounded fishy to me as well. When I read Twilight, I got the sense that Meyer just created her dream boy, named him Edward Cullen, and tacked on "Vampire" as his species designation because she heard somewhere that they drink blood, avoid sunshine and are supposed to be immortal. She capitalized on the avoid sunshine bit and made them sparkly. :Shrug:There didn't seem to be any complex thought processes involved (provided that she is even capable of such a thing).

There is a Twilight-hating thread???

Be still my heart. Lol.

Now I'm scared. I'm going to have to go through my MS and see how many "eyebrows" are in it...

Although I will comfort myself with the knowledge that I never used "scintillating" or "dazzle." Hallelujah.

I didn't even read Breaking Dawn. Skimmed it. Read the Jacob chapter (because Jacob MADE that whole series) but after that I just kinda went "meh. Bella goes into labor, Edward doesn't eat her or the baby despite the fact that she's hemorraging, Jacob falls in love with the newborn, and everyone lives happily ever after."

I genuinely liked The Host, though.

LOL! I've used scintillating in my manuscript, but it was to describe magical fire of sorts and not somebody's skin tone, so I'm gonna leave it there. I haven't read "The Host", but right now I have a rather large reading list to get through, so I may not get around to reading it for a while.

Are they really that good?

Forgive my stupidity but I've even picked up a Twilight book.

So I want to know....Are they really that good?

Keep in mind I'm a vampire fan, all kinds of vamps. My favorite is Anne Rice, but I'll read anything else written about vampires. But something has stopped me from reading these books though. Jeez, I don't even know how many there are.

:Shrug:I'm not sure, there is a lot of praise over it, from what here. You should check out Gena Showalter (my fav:Sun:) I think though that a lot of the 'love' is because of the movie.

Reading Twilight is a little bit like sticking a fork in a light socket.

If you manage to survive it, you learn not to touch it again.

you martyr and shine.
They are good like Twinkies are good. Which is to say, it's subjective. Some people love Twinkies, while others think they're bland and gooey. Even if you love Twinkies, they're still of dubious nutritive value. If you eat too many (say, 4) you may feel quite sick.

Just remember: they are aimed at young teenaged girls with little ability to discern good writing and story.

I've known plenty of teenage readers -- yes, even GIRLS -- who love good writing and good stories. They are an informed, passionate readership, and they don't deserve to be written off as ignorant. If you dip a toe into the female YA blogoverse, you will quickly learn how untrue that is.

Notice that I said "with". That makes your group exclusive to the group I was pointing at.
