I'm not offended by them, but thought it was very bizaare of a response. They do have a good history of selling books, so I didn't want to just write them off. I sent a response asking for clarification.

BTW - I did see that EJote forwarded my message to Tracey without any note to Tracey, so I assume that Tracey's job is to send out these inquiries, and that maybe Elizabeth passed - but a normal - pass - or request for more would have been easier to interpret.

I went to her blog and posted the question b/c she was chatting about submissions - we'll see if she can explain what Tracey meant. But I will be highly disappointed if she is referring us to a place as noted above...

On 11/19/08, I emailed query/synopsis/5 pgs to Ian Kleinert.
On 1/6/09, Jarred Weisfeld forwarded my message to Tracey Ravanelle.

Below is my version of the letter Gunshark, HippieGirl, and Tasha received, sent to me from Tracey Ravenelle via email today.

I also responded with a question for clarification. Now I'm on OE watch.

Thank you so much for contacting us at Objective Entertainment. We have
reviewed your material and we would like to refer you to one of our
Publishers who we trust and believe will be able to serve you best. In
order to do this I need your permission and the following information so
they can either contact you via Phone or Email. The following information
we need is if you would like to receive their newsletter and special offers.
I think this is an amazing opportunity for you.

Please reply with the information we asked so that we can get you that one
step closer to getting your work published!

Best,

Tracey Ravenelle

This is what I just received in response from Tracey:

"Melissa we want you to talk to a publisher we work with they will contact you ok?'

I then sent this back and received the following immediate reply:

"Sure. Does this mean Elizabeth is interested in representing me"

Her reply:
"Elizabeth will if the work is a success"

WTH does that mean??? They don't even have my manuscript - Do I have this wrong? Doesn't it go to an Agent, then to a publisher after it's gone through whatever rewrites/edits the Agent thinks is necessary?

Sounds like a scam to me. This must be there way of rejecting people without sounding harsh. Now what is your plan?

It means that once your self-published book is a success, and you've spent every last penny in your savings account and your children's college fundto publish and promote your book, EJ will consider representing you to legitimate publishers. Not cool. Not cool at all.

Rip off. I would rather have gotten nothing back and she should be ashamed of herself for this.

I saw that debate on her blog...

I just replied by saying, "Is there anything further you need from me? What publisher should I expect to hear from?"

BTW - They DON'T have my manuscript -or anything other than my query. I am not self-publishing, so if that's where this is headed, then forget it! Why, though, are they doing this if they have a reputation of selling books?

It does sound too scammy for me, too.

Asked for further info

This whole thing is rubbing me the wrong way. I've requested the name of the publisher and an explanation of the process she is suggesting. Quite frankly, if this is how Elizabeth Jote does business, it's not at all what I expected. And Tracey is not clear and is very evasive.

Has anyone tried contacting Elizabeth about these emails from Tracey?

Something seem fishy? The terrible grammar and the forward nature of the responses just seems inconsistent with what I know about Objective and Elizabeth.

Okay, well, I sent a note saying I was not interested until I had clarification of her process and the name of the publishers and here is our answer:

"author house or iuniverse they have the number 5 book on this weeks NY times list."

So there you have it!
Can anyone tell me why an agent is referring to a self publishing house?

No response to my question for clarification, maybe the week will bring more complete information.

This agency has some very professional folks heading it. I can't wait to see how this pans out.

Anything is possible.

And I can't help thinking - it's the weekend, full staff is not in. Things may be going out without polish.

Like it or not, it is a major red flag for a literary agency. However respectable they may have seemed, this is unprofessional and wrong.
