Great Ideas for additional practice threads...

ELMontague

Everyone,

I've gotten some great ideas in PM for practice threads that will do good things for all of us. If you've got an idea, post it here or IM me. I'll work out another thread to participate in on SYW - maybe later this week, using the best of what's here.

Best is obviously a group decision, not just mine.

Since people went a bit overboard on the kink thread, maybe a specific assigned kink would be a good challenge. It's easy enough to write about the ones you yourself enjoy, but it could be broadening to have to write 500 words on one that you're not into.

Which for me would be feet.

I feel like I shouldn't add ideas because I haven't done any of the practices yet, or asked for the password to the erotica SYW forum. *Is a lazy butt.*

However if you want ideas anyway, I've got plenty. My first thought is that the practices have focused on a specific sex scene, I'd like to see a practice which is about erotic worldbuilding (invent a sexual cult or holiday, unusual alien or magical creature sexual biology, a future fetish, etc). Also one where one character fantasizing about another while some non-erotic action is going on (Could be playing secret admirer to the object of desire, getting yelled at by the object of desire, being study/work partners with them, cleaning alone, or watching the object of desire with another lover.) Oh wait, was fantasizing already done???

For more simple ideas, I'd like to see incest (has been a big topic in the Sandbox recently), invent a new sex toy, transformation (I'm thinking magical bod mod but could be a gender change, turning into a superhero or werecreature, non-magical bod-mod, forced feminization (actually I've never seen a forced masculinization story, do they exist?), feeding/inflation/other growth/shrinkage, or any kind of training to transform someone's mannerisms, style, or personality. Cuckolding would also be an interesting challenge because that's one I don't really understand - I'd probably do it badly but it would be an interesting learning experience.

Ahem. Simple?

Er, yes. Simple because they could be just sex scenes and each can be expressed with a word or phrase. I just made it confusing by adding examples. Simple version: incest, new sex toy, transformation, and cuckolding.

I'd try any of those except incest, (unless it's incest in a sci-fi or fantasy story - I've read a few non-erotic sci-fi/fantasy stories that included incest, and they worked OK).

how about a series.. wherein the scene is semi-cast, but the practice would be to write the scene 3 times... once in a different genre.... make sense?

So say: Boy meets girl at a bar... write 500-1000 words in Romance, then Fantasy and finally in Science Fiction.... all with erotic tones???

Just a thought.

EL and I have been talking about something similar via PMs, having topics where you give a set of plot points, and everyone write the scene twice, one from each POV. (Or...three times, I guess, or whatever...depending on the topic. Heh.)

I would want to write incest in a fantasy setting myself, so I would hope it would be okay, but if it wasn't erotic that would kind of defeat the purpose. If you wanted you could twist it a bit to avoid actual incest - character A has sex with unrelated character B while wishing they could have related character C. Or depending on whether you define incest by genetics or being raised together, you could use an adopted character or a 'long lost' character or something like that.

lol - I worded that wrong - should have said "non-eroticA". One scifi story I'm thinking of (I canNOT remember the name) was pretty erotic, even though it was not erotica.

And heck, if it gets picked as a topic, I can always take a week off from the practice threads and get some work in on my own stories - :D

(I actually did get some work in yesterday...kicked out 4000 words in about five hours, of adequate stuff for a story that I've had outline for about a month and hadn't got around to starting on.)

Incest is one of those touchy subjects, way outside the comfort zone for an awful lot of people. If there is a purpose in it beyond arousal, then it's OK to experiment, but incest for the the erotic effect alone is questionable.

I was responding to Maryn's mention of the kink thread, trying to suggest some popular kinks - BDSM, incest, and crossdressing are the three most popular kinks there are (not in that order), as far as I know. Well maybe voyeurism or threesomes/orgies too, if those count as kinks. I purposely did not suggest pregnancy, my personal favorite kink, because I know it's a lot less popular than some others.

I'm not sure how you can say, in a forum about writing erotica, that any subject matter needs a purpose beyond arousal. o_O But certainly I don't want to force anyone to write anything, perhaps there sould be a general 'write a kink story' exercise, or 'forbidden love' exercise, or incest could be one of a few different kink options people could choose from. I think incest has inherent merit as a 'challenging' subject, but that's just me.

ELMontague

Interesting. I wouldn't list incest or pregnancy as a kink at all for very different reasons.

Wel-l-l technically, the rules are this: "Sexualized violence, non-consensual sexual situations, or underage characters in sexual situations are absolutely not permitted," So as long as those rules aren't violated, you should be good to go.

On the other hand, since we're talking about practice threads that EL is creating, to a certain extent it's up to EL (and I know you've been very open on topics, EL, even if it's things you wouldn't normally write about).

/me shrugs. Heck, I dunno. I always learn something moving outside my comfort zone, it's just that I'd have a tough time going there, unless it was fantasy/alien.

Like I said in another post, I guess you'd have to meet my family. :p

Now that makes me curious why not. Personally I tend to classify as a kink anything that has a zealous niche fandom.

SFLP - pretty much everything I write is good to go with those rules. I like happy stories, so violence and non-con don't appeal to me, and I'm also not really interested in writing about underage characters. The only rule I occasionally trip over is the no-bestiality one.

And PM responded to.

Personally, *I* trip over the "under 18" rules., and just did. I just posted a story in a practice exercise (fall) that in my head (it's a woman describing losing her virginity) they were 16 and 17. 18 was just too old for the story in some ways, but "rules is rules". I don't *think* there's a non-bestiality clause (though it's late, and I've had a couple of shots and, and, and...lol) though I'm sure it depends on the context.

It's like the link that you sent in my "Reading List" thread, with the giant cat alien and the little human. Technically, I suppose, it's bestiality, but it sure didn't read that way.

Perhaps it's a matter of extremes.

Actually fantasy, mythical, and alien beings don't count as animals according to any rules anywhere as far as I know. But there are a lot of places that forbid using regular animals. The only places that I know which archive bestiality stories also archive underage and rape/snuff stories, so I would imagine the legality is similar.

And I know what you mean, once in a while you get an idea where a 16 yr old would be perfectly logical and just plain work better. But, oh well, either it will work ok with an 18 yr old or I can write a different story. Or one can use a science fiction or fantasy race that ages completely differently I guess, I haven't gone that route myself but I've seen it done.

S&S - As a father, and therefore someone who's been there, pregnancy is pretty hetro-norm if you ask me. If you're faithful and don't go without for the 9 months a pregnant woman is no big thing. And there is nothing wrong with enjoying it. So, writing a story that plays on something like that isn't weird at all.

On the other hand, incest is taboo in most cultures and generally pushed to a corner for that reason. There are literary contradictions to that of course. For the most part though, what makes it intriguing is what's wrong with incest, not what's right. IMO.

ELMontague

Jem,

I'm not sure that's accurate and I'm not positive what the right answer is. I believe US is 18 for adults, some states allow 16 for minors (both/all parties). But anyway you look at it, the penalty for being wrong is big. Play it safe.

I agree that the forbiddenness of incest is its major appeal, but I sense you have never read impregnation, pregnancy, or lactation erotica. *chuckle* Don't underestimate how many women grow up with a fear of getting pregnant when they are strictly forbidden to do so, mixed with a paradoxical longing to do so because pregnancy can be seen as the essence of femininity and an essential ingredient of true romance. Men on the other hand grow up hearing fertility equated to animalistic virility and a key to being admired by other men, and fantasizing about the naughtiness of 'getting a girl in trouble', especially a socially superior girl or someone else's girl or a girl too innocent to know how babies are made. On the other hand men can see a pregnant woman as an ultimate mother figure or goddess incarnation and want to touch that magic, worship her, protect her, or be taken care of by her.

In modern western society, where teen pregnancy is thought of as terrible, babies are expensive and scary commitments, the number of single women in their childbearing years is higher than in any historical culture, and women pursuing education and careers put off getting pregnant until they fear they are running out of time, a lot of people have a lot of intense fears and desires associated with pregnancy.

ELMontague

Well, you got me there. I've never considered the erotic side of it for women. And I consider myself pretty open minded. Perhaps I'll have to broaden my reading.

Just to chime in... regardless how any of us might feel on a personal level... the 18 as age of consent is not just a board rule... it is a law. It puts the writer, the readers and the board all at very serious risk of imprisonment should it not be adhered to and the reason is, the board is hosted in US jurisdiction and depiction of underaged participants in sexual activity is clearly child pornography by legal definition. It doesnt matter that the age of consent is 16 here or 17 there... 18 is the law which presides jurisdiction. like EL said, the penalty for misguessing, is very severe.

umm... sorry for dumping a barrel of ice water on the fun! *lol*
