I regularly visit a few blogs. I go there to see what they most recently have to say. Since I follow them, I don't want to have all that magazine style clutter confusing me and getting in my way. I just want to read the newest story and move on.

Thank you everyone for the comments and opinions. As part of the renewed focus on my blog, I've overhauled the site to look a hell of a lot better than it used to.

I've gone the more traditional route with a few modern style tweaks. Let me know what you think.

I think it looks great but I would suggest a slightly less deep banner, to help regular readers get to the content stright away.

I agree with Veinglory about the banner. It could have less height and still have the writing that size. You just need the little man a bit smaller.

I also think you have a few two many of the little boxes at the bottom. On my screen, I have four rows of those boxes. Two would be the maximum I'd pay attention to (which'd be four summaries in total). The issue with that is you don't want me to stop scrolling down... because the previous entries button is right down there at the bottom.

Other than that, it looks clear and accessible. It's less busy and easier to read than the old one. Plus the banner picture sums it up better (the brown item on the first one seemed a bit generic).

Good recommendations. I reduced the banner height by roughly 30px and cut the white space padding around the blog in half. That should give more room to the content without drastically shrinking the banner or completely removing the white space.

Great post! I'm in the process of finding a web designer/developer, and wondered the same thing. I'm going with traditional. Thanks.

I'd like a combo. I like the top for simplicity. The magazine-y one is too cluttered but I what I would like is the newest blog post on top and the three precious post to display underneath in a horizontal row. That would be nice.
