Let's say your writing in third person past and you have a paragraph like this.
Michelle scanned the crowd as her puppy Bubbles purred against her chest. Really, did the school's animal code mean nothing to her? Where was she even going to put that thing? Sally really had no clue, but her musings came to an end after Michelle caught her staring.
Okay, I just quickly whipped that up, but let's say Sally is the MC, the POV is third person present....is the use of questions within the actual narrative (ie not in dialogue) distracting? Should it be better as actual thoughts, or does it help give the narrative Sally's voice? I've always wondered about this and I'm sure people have different takes on it so...any advice you can give me please go ahead!
Also, please no 'just change it to first person' answers lol. I'd like to see how one would handle this in third person.
