I recently watched The Air I Breathe. It's not what I normally like to watch, but I'll see anything if Brendan Fraser's in it. I really liked it. It's dark and sad, but gripping.

Got dragged to The Karate Kid. I thought it was LONG; I know some of the kids in the theater got bored in the middle.

Having said that, it was a beautiful movie in the establishing shots of the mountains and such when they're on the train, and I liked the little side story they gave Mr. Han (I just wish it hadn't been so sudden). I think the ending on this one was much better than the original, and even heard someone remark that at least this time the tournament scenes were realistic.

It was a smallish theater in Texas, and this is one of the very few movies I've ever seen there where most of the audience was clapping and cheering along with the movie. I still think about 45 minutes could have been chopped off without impacting the storyline at all. There was no need to start the movie in the states; it could have started either on the plane or in China.

Valkyrie

I liked it better than I expected to, but I really didn't believe Tom Cruise as a German soldier. And it struck me like many classic WWII films where all the Nazis are played by Brits who seem utterly British. At one point, someone even mentions having tea.

Finally went to see Iron Man 2, kinda because I had to. I liked it much more than I knew I should - mainly because the lead couple is fantastic. I had to admit I laughed and enjoyed the ride most of the way. Also, I like about the franchise that the lead is an engineer and programmer who uses these skills to save the world and get all the chicks, which I admire. Kind of a MacGuyver on steroids. Mickey Rourke is great, but I hoped they'd do more with Whiplash in the second act.
And I'm on a Scarlett Johannsen high. She's unbelievable...

Yeah. I liked the first half better than the later parts, though. And I had high expectations based on reviews. Definitely some disturbing bits, and some funny (probably not intentional) ones, as well. It kind of goes off the rails later on.

Last day or two:
True Crime - Not a lot happens, but I rather liked it as one of the slower, more laid-back Eastwood flicks. Plus it was shot around Oakland, so I couldn't help looking at the setting.

Joe Kidd - Kind of routine. For completists only (Western or Eastwood). That said, it looked gorgeous, even via Internet streaming, which was surprising.

The Blind Side - Which wasn't as sappy as I thought it might be. I liked it. Made an interesting comparison with the commercials for it, which pretty much give up the whole movie, but there are all these little divergences from what I expected.

District 9, finally. The first little bit left me feeling more than a little impatient, but once it got going, it got interesting. Left down by the ending, though. Overall, I give it a Meh.

Jonah Hex - **1/2

just got home from this one. it was fun, but what a complete and utter mess. 72 minutes of practically nothing. props to josh brolin and michael fassbender for providing the fun, and i never thought i'd say this, but NO props to john malkovich whatsoever. man couldn't hold a southern accent to save his life. i like the team of nevaldine and taylor, they've written some fun scripts, but they really need to start coming up with better middles, without relying so much on guys looking tough with explosions in the background.

When I was about eight, I discovered a couple of Rafael Sabatini novels at my grandmother's house. I re-read them every time I visited, and eventually liberated them. They're here in the house somewhere, among the other 10,000 books. One was Captain Blood, the other a photoplay edition of The Sea Hawk, illustrated with stills from the 1924 silent film. I finally watched it, after over forty years of wanting to see it. Damn good movie!
