Cake Wrecks did a post on King Cakes. Woowee, did the comments explode! There's some arguement about what a king cake actually is, and all the SRZ BZNZ is confusing me.

Can someone tell me what a king cake is? All I can gather is that it's cooked in some manner, it's frosted/glazed, and there's supposed to be a baby figurine inside. I also gather that there might be some regional variations on the king cake.

Thanks!

They were talking about this in the Newbie Pub earlier and I had no idea what it was. So, just to clarify, the baby isn't real? :D

It's a strange Southern US thing... part of the New Orleans area culture, rooted in Catholicism and turned into a very colourful party, like Mardi Gras.

Thanks, guys! I toook a look at the Newbie Pub and the Wikipedia article, and things are a little clearer. I must admit that I was reluctant to look in Wikipedia earlier because someone on the not-fried side in Cake Wrecks' comments doubted the authenticity of the article.

Yeah, it's plastic, kind of like the Carrot Jockeys. ;)

The baby inside sounds like someone took Jonathan Swift a little too seriously. Then I read it's supposed to represent the baby Jesus and I'm even more convinced they took Jonathan Swift too seriously.

they are non-venomous. however, be careful as their coloration and patterning can cause them to be confused with the venomous coral snake.

It's just a gawdy, ugly cake that would taste horrible if it weren't smothered in gaudy icing. With a baby inside. Whoever gets the baby is King or Queen and gets to throw the next Mardi Gras season party, or at least bring the next cake.

We had a mentally handicapped guy get the baby at the last one :D The tradition is hard to explain because it kinda makes little sense. Being King and getting a bunch of beads makes enough sense, I guess, so it was a success :D

I couldn't tell you if it's fried or not. With all of that icing, it could be made of haggis for all I know ;)

A king cake (sometimes rendered as kingcake, kings' cake, king's cake, or three kings cake) is a type of cake associated with the festival of Epiphany in the Christamas season in a number of countries, and in other places with the pre-Lenten celebrations of Mardi Gras or Carnival. Also the King cake are very Colorful..
