You might want to take a close look at dominant and recessive genes. If the whole family has blond hair, it's not likely and maybe not even possible to have a black-haired child. I know that two blue-eyed parents can't have a brown or green-eyed child. Anyway if you haven't checked already, it might be a good idea to take a look.
**raises hand** My mom and dad both have blue eyes - I have green eyes.
I know there is one species of fish that changes colors when it hunts. It goes from a flat-scale to a striped scale (I saw it on one of those BBC documentaries, but I can't remember which one. And of course, my google fu is letting me down) and the reason is to keep it from killing one of its own kind (or being killed itself in a feeding frenzy.)
I like the idea of the black changing to so many different colors (I'm also a sucker for a TDH hero. All of my heroes would have black hair if I had my way.
