*hugs my cover artist tight*

ETA: xiao, that reminds me of D33rskin by McKinl3. (Father rapes daughter in an intense retelling of the Grimm's fairy tale "Allerleiraugh".) Well-written but so difficult to get through. I gave away my copy because I knew I'd never re-read it.

Agreed.

How on earth did Sherlock not sweep the awards? :Wha:

i still haven't seen the entire 3 episode series.
(only the last one left, which i'm looking forward to.)

i still honestly think that this show is hit or miss
with the writing. i mean, i loved the mistress one
in the first epi this season (despite some far fetched things)
but the hounds? that bored me, i'm afraid.

the chinese dragon lady one was so scooby
doo (offensive sterotypes aside, honestly). they
could have done better than that, imo.
given it's only three episodes per season.

i found it so bad i never bothered to watch
the 3rd epi when moriaty appears 1st season?
whoops.
might go back to fix that, might not.

honestly, it's no Mad Men.

lily pie, i really enjoyed D33rskin, and didn't
find it as dark as you did. yes, the dark elements
were hard to read, but i found her survival and
ending hopeful over all?

F0rbidden it is consensual sex.
so you feel icky *wanting* them to do it.
(as the author has set it up.)
but the ending is hopeless and NOT uplifting
at all. and also, a plothole, imo.

I thought the middle episode of each Sherlock season was a bit dull, but the others are pretty good. You do have to grit your teeth a bit at times. The Blind Banker episode felt pretty racist and there was a nasty homophobic undertone to The Great Game. I try to ignore that stuff when I'm watching.

lily pie, i think the hardest parts
to read were actually the lead up to
the awful acts in D33rskin. i think
that was mckine1y's genius.
(i still can't believe SHE read my Ph0enix
books and loved them! i, alas, didn't read
her until after she read me. missed her entirely
in my youth. more great books for me to catch
up on!)

i find the moffat (is that the writer) guy
sometimes so clever in the zingers that i've
lost complete track of the plot. so yes, it
is hit and miss for me, but when done well,
very enjoyable to watch.

i have Sunshine. but think i better get Be4ty.
seems a favorite among many mckinely fans.
i'm actually not a huge fan of retellings, but
trust her (and friends who are fans) to know
i'll enjoy the reads.

i was almost entirely a solitary reader in
my youth. my family didn't read (english books--but
really, none of my immediate fam are book readers).
and i rarely discussed books with my friends. there was no
internet. so what i read was literally what i stumbled
on or was prominently displayed at bookstores
or (like with my beginning love affair wtih iris murd0ch)
because she was listed on a teen summer reads list
for A S3vered Head. how could i say no to that title? ha

never in the here and now
I enjoyed the Sherlock episodes but what strikes me is that each reinvention of Sherlock moves the character further and further away from the original. This Sherlock would be diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. Someone on another forum who hadn't read any of the stories or seen the early movies found his extreme rudeness to ordinary people in this series made him a very unlikeable character. I thought that was interesting.

amarie, so true. but isn't this how
it is with reimaginings? you have to make
it new and different and fresh *somehow*.
i was sad when holmes mocked the girl who
liked him for her small books. =(

small books needed to be lovingly paged
through as well!

(haha!)

Little boy’s birthday today — the club has a HUGE MD bash every year, and the DJ called a happy birthday to him, kids had tons of fun and are now wiped, and I’m going to revise more while hubs goes to the grocery after hot dogs and cake. :)

Lily, I want some sausage bread. I’ve never heard of it before, but it sounds AMAZING!

It's so easy, too!

Sausage Bread

Oven 375o
35-40 minutes

1 lb pizza dough
1 lb cooked, crumbled sausage
2 C shredded mozzarella

Divide dough in half. Roll the first half in a rectangle with a rolling pin (it's not the purists' way, but it works just fine). Sprinkle half the sausage over the dough, then sprinkle half the cheese over the sausage. Roll up like a jelly roll; seal. Repeat for second half of dough. Bake till nicely browned. (The "tap on the bottom for the hollow sound" test does not work for this.)

Substitutions:

Sliced pizza pepperoni
Frozen broccoli, thawed and drained (sprinkle 1/4 tsp of garlic over all before you roll it up)
Fresh or frozen spinach (thawed and drained) (sprinkle 1/4 tsp of garlic over all before you roll it up)

So I finally tackled the tile floors in the kitchen and dining nook. I knew they were dirty, but... wow. Whoever lived here before never cleaned. And whoever lived her before the people who lived her before ALSO never cleaned. I actually had to stop because I wore out my mop head. Then I used a dish cloth to wipe up the excess water and it turned brown. Nice.

jo, tell me how you like it if you
get to it soon!

and as for her covers--i've seen a lot
worse. haha!

Looking at them all lined up the only thing I could think was that the designer approached the project like this: "Hmm, the author is a black woman. The protagonist is a black woman. I know! I'll put a black woman on the cover! All done!"

Riiiiight.

i still honestly think that this show is hit or miss
with the writing. i mean, i loved the mistress one
in the first epi this season (despite some far fetched things)
but the hounds? that bored me, i'm afraid.

You're 100% right. I've enjoyed watching all of the episodes mostly for the interplay between Holmes, Watson, and Moriarty. The plots themselves are sometimes pretty good, sometimes downright awful. No comment on the one with the Chinese lady. Ugh.

Has anyone read Warm Bodies? It's the book that zombie love movie is based on. I finished it a few weeks ago. Tried it on an experiment because when I saw a blurb about the movie I was like, seriously? So I thought it would be bad - but the first 1/3 sucked me in big time. Then it just went downhill from there. Don't wanna spoil the ending for anyone interested, but I don't think it's possible to pull off a Romeo and Juliet redux with a happy ending.

ETA: Just to be clear, I don't mean to just trash the book, I'm curious if anyone else really liked it, as it's getting stellar reviews. :)

I was all set to ask Lily what sausage bread was, and if pepperoni could be substituted, and lo, she hath answered my plea already!

Spent yesterday at my uncle's (who has a pool) and today at the water park with kiddo and best friend, so I am thoroughly water-logged and a bit crisp around the edges.

Good weekend.

Cindy- it went really well. I got a request for pages from one of the agents who read 10 pages and a few others from work shops. So Yay!!!

Also it was nice to be back in NY and able to hang out. We were there for 6 days and didn't use a fork to eat once. Yum!

Yay, Brandy! *vamp dust*

Jo, when we moved into our house 24 years ago, we decided one weekend early on to tackle the kitchen floor. We thought it was brown with a beige design.

Several hours and a few scrub brushes later, we had a light beige floor with a white design. O.O
