^explosions are awesome. Too bad in my line of writing (playwriting), they can't happen, otherwise my new play would have had a on-stage car crash in it. Maybe I'll just have someone shoot the bastards.

So quiet in here. Anyone read Team Human? Bought it the other day and loved it. Very funny deconstruction of the paranormal romance genre. And SRB is coming out with a gothic next year that's almost a parody of Touch Not the Cat, if anyone's read that (it is an odd book).

I haven't yet! I seriously want to. :D

I just got a good idea for a plot twist for my play I'm talking about. It turns out that after the M.E. examines the bodies, she testifies that one of the girls is pregnant, and after further questioning, reveals the unborn child is a product of incest from her younger brother.

My question lies, in the fact that, I've NEVER heard of incest being used in such a plot twisting way. Would you think it's too taboo, or too lax, and I should come up with something better?

I'm meeting SRB in a week!

ETA: And Unspoken isn't coming out in a year, it's coming out in September. She's giving out advance copies where I'm meeting her. I bought Team Human for a plane ride, been resisting it.

ETA2: Comped... you clearly haven't heard of the Lannister twins :) or Game Of Thrones, or The Borgias, or Flowers In The Attic... baseline, it's been done. You can totally use it, but plenty of fictional siblings have had children together.

Are you considering this for the shock factor or because you genuinely think it would be a good plot twist? I think you need an actual plot with stakes, rising action, a climax, and a resolution.

I don't know. It seems like something that would happen in a soap opera. Honestly, I think you could come up with a better plot twist, but if it works for your play, keep it.

What do you suggest, ely?

HR, to answer your plot question, I do have a somewhat idea of the actual plot. However, I thought, when I planned it out, that there wasn't much of a twist, besides the past scenes, and one or two other things. There would be subtle hints in the past scenes, in order to make sure this isn't too far out of left field.

Is this about the play that you posted on SYW awhile back or a new one?

New one HR. The old one (still no crits BTW peeps) doesn't need the incest. It has drinking, teen pregnancy, sex, the Queen's underwear, and scenes with the characters reading a play about bunions. No need for incest.

Hmm. I don't know. I'm not sure what your play is about to know what kind of plot twist will work. If you can't think of any other ones, keep the one about the baby belonging to the younger brother until or if you think of something better.

The play centers on two bits: a murder trial, and the story of how the victims, all teens, died. Mostly the 2nd point is related through back story, told as "testimony", but actually being separate scenes. It turns out that the murderer is the nephew of one of the fathers, who's kids were amoung those murdered. The secondary MCs are the incestual ones. The ME only reveals the semi-twist at the trial (semi twist because it's hinted at beforehand), because it's asked if there's anything strange with the bodies. The boy is eventually convicted and killed, both on stage. Just wondering if it should be by the parents, or government.

Comped, you have to come up with a story yourself. And it will only be good if you feel passionate about it and about writing it. If you feel that way about this plot twist, then cool, go for it. But if you just want to write it for shock value and don't feel connected to it or the characters at all, that will be obvious in your writing.

Take the Lannister twins, from ASOIAF (Game Of Thrones series). In this medieval world, she's the Queen and he's a Knight and they have three kids together they've passed off as the King's children. This is one of the major plot points of the first book, and is very important to the following. However, this is an integral part of both characters, both of whom are treated sensitively and sympathetically, and while it affects both characters, it does not define them- rather, the events of their lives that have defined them clearly lead up to and explain this.

So, at the end of the day, write a story that matters to you and characters who matter to you, and make them matter to the audience. And if you can successfully do that, you've written a good play.

I haven't written for a loooong time, and now the words are just flowing out. It's kind of ridiculous.
